    Hi
My 1.4 TSi Golf match is coming up to the 3 year mark it has only done 18000 miles and will be out of warranty in June
My question is has anybody had problems with this Engine or any other issues and at what mileage as I have heard reports about noisy timing chains.
I may keep the car due to its low mileage but was wondering if I need t take on the VW extended warranty "as yet not had quote "

dont know if they are the same engine, or the problem was sorted before the mk6. Worth a read though

I have seen them with failed chains, failed supercharger clutches, leaking water pumps, rattling con rod bearings and worst and most common of all, burnt out exhaust valves due to heavy valve guide wear and with as little as 30K on the clock....Downsized massively pumped up engines, crap modern oil with no Zinc additive, Longlife serving, poor quality fuel and owners abusing serve intervals, it all stacks up. These downsized boosted engines are a future owner nightmare time bomb. They may get the Co2 figures down and LongLife servicing keeps the first owners costs down but God help the poor sods who buy one of these things when they are 10 years old, scrap yard fodder in waiting. In the next few years we will start to see the current crop of new cars being utter disasters and seeing a five year old car scrapped due to the repair costs will become a common occurrence.

Thanks we can always rely on you for a comprehensive answer you echo my though as well but as you say all manufactures are going down this road so may keep it a year and have VW warranty. My Main choice for replacement would have been Seat but same type of Engine other choice was the Hyundai wth7 year warranty

If you're worried about it the easiest solution is just to take out an extended warranty. You might never need it but gives you peace of mind in case it goes wrong. I've had the timing chain issues myself with the same engine. www.volkswagenextendedwarranty.co.uk

Thanks that's the way I may go but you have to wait for VW to contact you at the end of 3 year warranty so car is in for service and MOT in June so will ask then

If you like the car buy the warranty - will not be expensive especially as it will bring with it full RAC breakdown cover - maybe £25- £30 a month - compare that with the cost of changing a car which isn't even run in properly
I bought one for previous Golf as peace of mind in case the gearbox went
Didn't have to claim on it and even got a very substantial refund when I changed to the petrol one.

Is that the TwinCharger engine crasher, or the regular, single-turbo, ~122PS engine? My Polo is, erm, ageing to say the least, and I saw a Mk.6 1.4 TSI SE for not too much money on AutoTrader the other day!
    2002 Polo 9n 1.2 65PS. Basic but it's better than the train!

The chains are problem on all with them and the exhaust valve issue is just rolling on from the earlier versions when this problem started to become common, around 2001 on the 1.4 and 1.6 16v.
