mr fish, come back down south!

My current contract here in London is a bit too lucrative to let it slip. But I might move back down south once it comes to an end. There's quite a few Telecomms companies that have set up shop in Basingstoke over the last 2 years. It's not that far a drive from Southampton. Used to that trip every day for over a year.

Freedom loomes... 30 more minutes and its time for me to got home and get some wel deserved . But before I go, here is something that (hopefully) will bring a smile on all you guy faces while you're sitting in the office having another boring day... :D

What starts with an F and ends with a K

A first-grade teacher (Ms. Brooks) was having trouble with one of her students. The teacher asked, "Harry, what's your problem?" Harry answered, "I'm too smart for the 1st grade. My sister is in the 3rd grade and I'm smarter than she is! I think I should be in the 3rd grade too!"

Ms. Brooks had had enough. She took Harry to the principal's office. While Harry waited in the outer office, the teacher explained to the principal what the situation was. The principal told Ms. Brooks he would give the boy a test. If he failed to answer any of his questions he was to go back to the 1st grade and behave. She agreed. Harry was brought in and the conditions were explained to him and heagreed to take the test.

Principal: "What is 3 x 3?"
Harry: "9."

Principal: "What is 6 x 6?"
Harry: "36."

And so it went with every question the principal thought a 3rd grader should know. The principal looks at Ms. Brooks and tells her, "I think Harry can go to the 3rd grade" Ms. Brooks says to the principal, "Let me ask him some questions." The principal and Harry both agreed.

Ms. Brooks: "What does a cow have four of that I have only two of?"
Harry: "Legs."

Ms. Brooks: "What is in your pants that you have but I do not have?"
Harry: "Pockets."

Ms. Brooks: "What does a dog do that a man steps into?"
Harry: "Pants."

Ms. Brooks: What starts with a C, ends with a T, is hairy, oval, delicious and contains thin, whitish liquid?"
Harry: "Coconut."

At this stage, the principal sat forward with his mouth hanging open.

Ms. Brooks: "What goes in hard and pink then comes out soft and sticky?"

The principal's eyes opened really wide but before he could stop the answer, Harry was replying...

Harry: "Bubble gum."

Ms. Brooks: "What does a man do standing up, a woman does sitting down and a dog does on three legs?"
Harry: "Shake hands."

The principal was trembling.

Ms. Brooks: "What word starts with an 'F' and ends in 'K' that means a lot of heat and excitement?"
Harry: "Firetruck."

The principal breathed a sigh of relief and told the teacher, "Put Harry in the fifth-grade, I got the last seven questions wrong.

Had a phone call from Mrs QV this morning. She turned out of our road across the A580 towards Worsley centre and the M60 and low and behold a queue. As she gets near to Leigh Road (nicknamed Millionaires Row) she sees the problem. A young fellow completely naked with his clothes on the pavement.

I reckon he was sleep walking or just plain lost it, but Mrs QV said a car on the other side of the road had stopped and he was talking away to them. Lots of rubber neckers it seemedhttp://www.windowsguide.org/forum/images/smilies/laugh.gifhttp://www.windowsguide.org/forum/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Myself and the other half are deeply considering buying my 16 year old son an A2 as his first car. He will be 17 in March, and going from Gatley (A34) to Trafford College everyday he will soon need a car.

I was thinking of an A2 because it's in group 5, whereas an A3 is group 8 and that means it becomes unaffordable to him as a first car. 64 mpg from the A2 as well, and the £35 road tax, makes it become an attractive buy. Also, having looked at the A2s, the interior looks like it has a much better finish than the Leons and Boras of the equivalent age (about 2001).

I wouldn't buy one for myself, but hey, if you were turning up at college near all your mates and you discussed what cars you owned, and the others said Clio, Corsa, Astra, Punto or 106 then A2 sounds rather nice ! :D

Each to their own taste though...

Not sure about buying one for myself... Never really liked the A2 until I saw the one that is owned by someone living in my neigbourhood. Nicely tinted windows (smokey, not the "maffia you can't see trough my windows" black) and 17" alloys. Looks stunning. If I were to look for a little runabout as a 2nd car, the A2 would probably be high on my list...

I would have been chaffed as well when I was 17 and my dad got me an A2... For the same reasons you just mentioned.

Me doesn't think he realises just how lucky...

I want to get him a diesel though, and the other half wants him to be driving a safe car. Obviously I don't want to be fixing his motor each weekend, so another reliable Audi <all hands on wood> would be great.

If he doesn't play his cards right he won't end up with anything haha !

Morning good people of VWAF.
Picked my sister-in-law up from terminal two at Manchester airport last night. With all the security measures they ask you to go into the multi storey car park. I was in 10 minutes (excluding the reversing out into a stream of traffic) and it cost £2.

I waited on a residential road near the airport for 30 minutes or so, so I was near and ready to pick them up when they phoned. The police are (and should be) keen. They passed me 10 minutes before I set off into the car park and then just after I set off. I reckon had I still been parked up they would of moved me on.

had my creaky bits checked out earlier.

garage couldnt locate the direct cause of the creak, had it up on a ramp and said there is no play in anything, and might just be a dry bush http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y141/dansansome/quagmire.jpg or something, and they would only be replacing bits for the hell of it.

basic upshot was that its ok to drive at the moment, but if/when it gets worse, bring it back and they'll look at it again.

oh, and no charge :)

well, they said that they knew something wasnt quite right (obviously because of the creaking) but they couldnt identify exactly where it was coming from, so they would only end up just replacing stuff until they got the right bit (=expensive).

might get it checked elsewhere too, just for a second opinion.

Floppy Disk info (http://computer.howstuffworks.com/floppy-disk-drive1.htm)

<quote>The floppy disk drive (FDD) was invented at IBM by Alan Shugart in 1967. The first floppy drives used an 8-inch disk (http://www.howstuffworks.com/hard-disk.htm) (later called a "diskette" as it got smaller), which evolved into the 5.25-inch disk that was used on the first IBM Personal Computer in August 1981. The 5.25-inch disk held 360 kilobytes compared to the 1.44 megabyte capacity of today's 3.5-inch diskette. The 5.25-inch disks were dubbed "floppy" because the diskette packaging was a very flexible plastic envelope, unlike the rigid case used to hold today's 3.5-inch diskettes.
By the mid-1980s, the improved designs of the read/write heads, along with improvements in the magnetic recording media, led to the less-flexible, 3.5-inch, 1.44-megabyte (MB) capacity FDD in use today. For a few years, computers had both FDD sizes (3.5-inch and 5.25-inch). But by the mid-1990s, the 5.25-inch version had fallen out of popularity, partly because the diskette's recording surface could easily become contaminated by fingerprints through the open access area.</quote>

if you're gonna stick movies on it then maybe an 8GB would be better.

i always get my cards from fleabay. £18 should get you a genuine sandisc 8GB card, as long as you dont mind non-retail packing. pm me if you want a couple of ebay sellers i have used successfully.

If you are anywhere near pahos then hire a speedboat out to zoom about the bay - it's excellent.

Also visit Tomb of the Kings and Coral Beach - Coral Beach is the best beach on the cyprus side of the island.

The best beaches are on the turkey side (north) of the island.

It's easier to get into the north of the island from Turkey itself than it is from the cyrpus side !!

Although I think you can get a day pass.

Oh and the wine tasting was cool (maybe if you're 23 though, perhaps not)

The free shot of brandy after every meal is good as well.

For two:

Stick oven on 230 degrees

Add a good gulp of vegetable oil to a very thin baking tray (high sides) and stick it in the oven

115 grams of plain flour
3 eggs
285ml of milk (1/2 pint in old money)

Flour into bowl
eggs into bowl
pinch of salt

whisk up
slowly add milk whilst whisking

Set aside

Fry for 5 minutes some sausages all over

open oven and stick sausages in hot oil - careful not to splash.
place back into oven
wait two minutes and add the bowl full of mixture from above to the sausages and oil.
back into oven and set the timer for 15 minutes.

peel and slice one large or two medium onions and fry them with a splash of olive oil.

once caramelised a bit set aside.

Heat up some water in a pan.
put kettle onto boil.

after 15 minutes check by looking through glass in oven to see if the item inside is massive and brown, if not wait another 2 minutes before continuing on:

3 minutes to go:

Add sweetcorn to boiling water - remove sweetcorn after water comes back to the boil and drain - set aside

as the sweetcorn goes in :

Gravy options:
add gravy granules to jug and add boiling water.
onion gravy from a jar - heat in pan(is best)

once gravy is hot - add cooked onions from above

Get food from oven - cut in two and add to warm plate
put sweetcorn on plate
put onion gravy on plate

enjoy your Toad in the hole with sweetcorn and onion gravy.

:beerchug:

Variations:

Whilst sausages are just about to go in you can spread a layer of english mustard to them.

Red onions work just as well.

Sage and Onion packet gravy is just as nice

Buy sausages that are all linked up - wind them back and roll and squish them to make one long sausage - roll it up in a sprial and stick a kebab stick through it to hold it together.

I had a blow-out night last night. It involved a pizza each, 3 bottles of wine & a huge bar of Fruit&Nut & same sized bar of Cabury Bubbly (basically thin Wispa. Do they still make Wispa?). Zillions of calories but very entertaining!! Neither of us felt rough this morning which probably speaks volumes!!! Too much of a good thing... ;)
Enjoy yours tonight Mr. Sansomite!
Anyway, I'm going to 'swear' off now chaps, toodle pip, tarrar & ciao for now!! :nana:

sushi eater here.

love fish and seafood of all sorts. not a big fan of oysters, but havent had one in a long time (bad memories as a kid of one being drowned in tobasco sauce, which caused my mouth to melt).

Same here... Regular visitor of Yo Sushi restaurants, especially the one at Piccadilli Circus in London... Trip to London is never complete without a visit to that place (and a drinking session at Gordon's Winebar at Embankment...)

As for the Oysters my friend, try one with a little lemon squeezed onto it and a little champagne... bliss... :D

Rick Stein - his enhusiasm is admirable and his love of fish infectious, I've watched in awe sometimes as he composes his dishes

Gordon Ramsey - An obvious one, but this man is an absolute genius, he's all about simple, honest cooking, but doesn't mess around either.

Ainsley harriot - yes hes a little annoying and yes he's a big guy, but he knows his food and he's probably the one TV chef responsible for getting me into cooking properly.... he has a passion for food, a true one, not one like these other generic tele chef types that do it purely for the money :approve:

my personal favourites are Gordon Ramsey, for the same reasons as EE

Jamie oliver, some of his rustic cooking dishes just look amazing, and his jamie at home on bbq food was awesome. i dribbled all through that episode.

..and a current inspiration* of mine is ching-he huang (sp) in the chinese cooking made easy. some of the dishes look gorgeous, and pretty simple too.

Fiver says he loses his gold watch ;)

As for the Morris Dancer sentiments, I know some people mistake the Beetle for a Morris but I thought you lot would at least get it right :(

Col, you promised to never share my stick story, I'm deeply hurt.

I'm sorry.

At least you have some history to it as Morris Dancing is passed down generation to generation.

I don't like, from how you described it, the initiation ceremony though. The thought of having to clench a bunch of stinging nettles there makes me wince a little bit.

A noble and ancient persuit.

'Swear' it, I'm going home too. I'm not being paid a penny more for sticking around, I'm close to killing someone for fun due to no sweet, sweet nicotine all day & I generally can't be 'swear'ed!

Anyway... for all you gents who need to munch all day long because cereal bars don't live up to their promisse, try this one for for breakfast:

- 1 flass of mik
- 1 banana
- 1 handfull of porridge oats.

Put in a blender and drink it... Much healthier than cereal-killer bars and you won't be needing any more munchies until at least lunchtime...

don't chance it till saturday at least.

Do have proper cycling shorts? with the leather inside?

I do, then i stick any old shorts over the top - after all lycra is for the 'swear'ies with thin tyres and funny handlbars.

The leather insert in the lycra shorts makes a massive difference.

This is identical to my bike:

Balderdash & piffle! No mushy peas!! I've tried to provoke unrest in the discerning southern chippy enthusiast a while ago in the 'tailgating Audi drivers/ north-south divide/ fast food/ pets' thread. Everyone deserves a host of condiments. A chippy should have as a minimum mushy peas, gravy & curry sauce. It's only the northern chippy enthusiast who has the pleasure of such moist jollities!! Brothers & sisters of the south, you deserve more!!
