Correction: "Belgian chips rule"... I already told you: what they call chips here in the UK is considered by us Belgians as "halved potatoes..." :D

Sorry DesertFish, can I rudely interrupt (BTW, isn't Desert fish a bit of an Oxymoron, or at best an extremely endangered species ?)

DH, I'm cross posting threads from the Dream Garage, Just saw the 'family photo album' :p.

Anyway, I can only say that you must be "losing your head" or at least "need your head examined" (from an avatar point of view)!

Give my regards to the family.

Mathbox cars! I had loads of them! They were made of metal & said Made In England underneath! You try to find either of those in a toy now! All plastic & made thousands of miles away so they can pay some poor sod a couple of quid a day if they're lucky!!
Anyway, I'm too excited about these ace toys af yesteryear to get heavy!

I remember the Lesney/Matchbox toys, they were a feast for a little boy's imagination, particularly with a group of friends :o.

Not really a toy, really more of a hobby, do you recall AirFix models ?

This is tentative to say the least; might it possible to ascribe the lack of Engineering / Science graduates to the demise of Matchbox toys and Airfix models ?

Correlation time ...

In fact, on a deeper theory of learning note, is the choice of toys more influential on a child's future than we credit for ?
Sorry, I'm getting a little too deep ...

The origins of the name "Desertfish" are a bit hard to explain, but the oxymoron in the name was what I thought was really funny... Have been using the name ever since I started playing Unreal Tournament online back in 2000...

Yes Action Man was also available in Belgium but I never had any of them. That's because they are from a time when I was alreay grow up and my favourite toys were wearing miniskirts... :D

I remember Airfix well! I made quite a few tanks & planes in my time! You may have a point there, toys don't seem to stimulate dexterity now, they're interactive alright, but usually on a screen! We needs toys that get little fingers working overtime in conjunction with busy minds, planning & building & inventing!

That's quite a cunning ploy. I'm not really a hardcore gamer myself, didn''t have much spare time (there was an episode during software integration testing involving UDP packets ... but that's a story for different time).

However, I can imagine other players subconciously trying to unravel the Oxymoron while playing, hence not being able to fully concentrate on the game, so enventually losing.

If you can name it, think about, taste, smell, lick, touch, break, cut, saw, crush, mend or anything else, that is what the Horse said to the Fish and "Vicky-Verky"

In other words; blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, and so on and so forth.

In fact, I'd like to see the Horse and the Fish re-enact the olde Les Dawson sketch whereby he is a gossipy olde fish wife rabbiting over the garden fence.

Whilst talking about Les Dawson, maybe Sam could lend us his Morris Dancing hankies so we could wear them on our heads and have an online gurning competition?

Like what?

Assembling a motley crew of battle hardened rebels from the remenants of House Atrades to try and defeat the evil Harkconnan empire? Remember you can't fold space without it.

or is it to;

Read the mindless memoirs of blokes who really should be talking about cars but instead are trying to re-enact that rather tedious thirteen year old schoolboy witty comment phase to like minded blokes who are also trying to do it and who will actually listen?

Phew read it all now.

Dinky and Corgi toys. Dinky cars were better as they generally had more moving parts. Matchbox were just too small.

I too dumped them in three big boxes that slid under the settee. My older brother's toy cars were in there too. They all ended up scratched. I seem to remember donating them all to my primary school as we got older.

Morning BTW.

I have now spent nigh on four hours trying to remove one shock absorber from the Mondy. The bottom bolt appears to be rusted into the metal sleeve on the bush :zx11: Wish I had paid to have it done now but unfortunately at a point of no return. - 1 flass of mik

- 1 handfull of porridge oats.

Put in a blender and drink it... Much healthier than cereal-killer bars and you won't be needing any more munchies until at least lunchtime...

I was in croydon today, happily walking along, just about to cross the road when a tram came round the corner - i let it past and then noticed that it was indicating?

Indicating?

Why on earth does it need indicators?

It's not as if it could of gone straight on or right?

It HAD to follow the tracks which went left.

Trains don't have indicators, nor do roller coasters, boats don't have them.

I might fit some to my hoover, iron and son. All of which CAN turn left or indeed right without warning.

Been "updating" on this thread from 8am this morning... (on and off...)

My my, i'm proud of my fellow Vagettes for acomplishing something i struggle with. Waffling!

circa 11 pages since i last logged on.

Anyway, I was sat in my car at the local morrisons, some old codger "parked" into my car . He must of been 80, and drove a 1989, G reg Lada Samara.

Theres not much damage, just a 4" long scratch to the lower rear (right) bumper.

He decided he couldn't see any damage, so i cleaned the offened area with some polish i had handy in the boot and not the scratch is clearly visable. Yet he still cant see it? bland as a bat!

Got his insurance details anyway, oh what joy!

bad luck Nick, im all in favour of regular re-tests when you get to that age.

i was in a car park last week, and there were some unattended trolleys near my car, as i returned (sat in my car, engine just started), some woman was adding her trolley to the collection, as she did, the front one made a bid for freedom and slowly rolled into my front bumper. the woman just stood there going "ooh, ooh, oooh" as it bounced off, rather than stepping forward one pace, and grabbing the loose trolley. stupid cow. even stood there afterwards and said, "i dont think it hurt it" :zx11:

luckily there was no damage.

Anyway, sorry for you Nick. I'm sure neither my father, or my two father-in-laws should be on the road.

Myself and Chris (my son to you lot who don't know) have a good giggle at one of my father-in-laws, who decided to re-paint the whole rear bumper of his Honda Accord after scrawping it on his gatepost. It wasn't THAT bad. So in the end cos he's as blind as a bat he's ended up with a matte green bumper on a metallic green car. Could he not have just asked for a little help from myself if he's that bothered. I spent more time re-building cars than he has spent at the dinner table.

Anyway, Lord Fish... how is the shift of death ? All those numbers, they must get on your breasts...

Poor bloke.

Anyway, somebody tried to get an arguement going earlier in this thread... and yes diesels are better !

To be honest, I reckon Audi would enter a diesel F1 car. The only thing is, to make the diesel fast, they would need a turbo, which is banned in F1. So, if you hear of turbos being bought back to Formula One then expect a VAG group diesel car to enter one day. After all, as a technical exercise, it would certainly grab attention.

Back to you Lord Fish, is there something I can do to give some muppets a few problems, and therefore give you something to do ? :p

Yeah... everyone so far who answered that one went for "diesel" as an answer... Not much of an argument left if everyone is ageeing...

I do agree with Audi entering F1 though. Considering that they stuck a V12 TDI in the R8 and made it go even faster than the petrol version, Audi might be able to cause some real fireworks in F1... :D. As you said though, FIA would need to allow turbo's again...

On one hand I don't see them doing so, but on the other hand, its kinda ironic that they banned turbo engines because cars were going so fast FIA felt that in the interest of safety it was better not to allow turbos anymore... But it took only two seasons for cars to go faster without turbo engines than they did before with turbo's... :biglaugh::biglaugh::biglaugh:

Aye, these guys are useless at making the cars go slower. I mean, for next year, they've taken downforce off the cars, therefore less grip. Fine, that should decrease speeds as the cars will have to slow down more. But... they've gone and bought slick tyres back ! Slick tyres = more grip ! So all the speed that was decreased they've only gone and bought it back !

Anyway, Paul B is signing off for the night. Keep plugging Lord Fish, with your swords and your Lord Fish cape, and your Black Beauty as a chariot, may you keep the blessed tinterwebnet thing running long into the night !

That made me smile. I like the last comment about the Hoover, your son :p You should give up the day job :D

DH I only started watching F1 in 2005, never watched it ever before that. Cos of the Mondy someone bought me a Ferrari F1 book and I was just gonna bin it, but read it instead. So here I am an F1 fan (though not yet been to a race).

Diesel engines are crap, DH has said it but so will I. They create clouds of black soot, they run out of steam a 4000rpm, they sound like tractors (except the Honda diesel), you should have your own lanes at the petrol station as the stuff is greasy and stinks like 100 year old engine oil and gets all over the mats in my car.:D

As for Le Mans well that is even more boring than F1 :D. The TeDious's are in complete contrast to proper petrol propelled racing cars the're silent.:p

So to sum it up. They stink, they make a racket (unless a racing car) and produce hazardous shoe fodder.

I will probably never own a diesel.

The debate continues...

i cant be bothered finding out where this diesel argument has arisen, but for me, diesel wins every time.

it's not the MPG, it's more the torque and the solidity the sound of a diesel gives me, must admit though i do like being able to run a car at a fast pace and STILL average above 30mpg :approve:

I was about to post something like:
" It seems like you've had nothing but trouble with this car since you got it... Where did you get it from? Sounds like a dodgy dealer!"

But, fair play to the guy.... this restores some faith in the company and in the car in some way as well?

Well... reading trough all the posts of today, I can somewhat understand where the "petrol-pro committee" is coming from, at least where the sound of a diesel is concerned.

When I was given an 1.9 TDi MK5 Golf to use for a few weeks I was amazed about the torque of it, but it did somewhat sound like a lorry (was the reason why Ex-Ms. D'fish hated it). Then a few months ago when I got my new car, I initialy went to the dealer to look at a black 1.9 TDi 130 PD Bora. Started it up and there was the lorry sound again... But when I got in the Passat with exactly the same engine I was amazed of the difference in sound... It wasn't the only reason I drove away with the Passat instead but it surely helped in my decision.

Besides, Mr. EE is right as well... the torque produced by diesel engines nowadays is amazing. I learned how to drive in a diesel 17 years ago. If you compare the engines of that time with what they're producing now there is lightyears difference. I'm not smoking any GTi's (will need to wait for my remap for that) but I'm keeping up with them without trouble. I think that says enough about diesels...

Paul if F1 turns diesel then I will stop watching it, cos Ferrari will no longer participate.:D Ferrari do not make diesels.

I do think it will go green though. Next year they are doing this regenerative crap. Bolox it is, how hypocritical can it be, motor racing is pure pleasure how can it possibly be green?

I drove the Ford S-Max the other week and the diesel engine was superb torque and all. They are quiet at speed, much more so than a petrol cos they are still ticking over. I just can't get used to the idle noise and the lack of revs.

Each to their own. Diesels make far more green sense than all this hybrid crap ;).

Actually I do disagree with you there on that point... All forms of motorsport are generally for pleasure appart from F1 and Road Rallying... You'd be surprised how much stuff is tested out in those area's and eventually makes it into production cars...

Take traction control for example... what do you think the testing ground was for that one...?

Desertfish
08-08-2008, 09:20 PM
Besides... I've lost my love for F1 years ago when at the 2002 Austrian Grand Prix, Barichello was asked to move over for Schumacher and give the win to them... Oh and what cars were they driving... Wasn't it that same brand that was accused in 2007 for espionage and sabotage...?

Stupid stunts like that are the real danger for F1 loosing its appeal... not the fact that they want to pioneer green technology... I really don't see whay innovation and fun can't go hand in hand...

DF mate I know F1 develops technology for road use, (that alone can't justify it surely) but I was pointing to the fact that it is trying to be greener. For it to be green it has to cease ;)

It is like me saying my Mondy is green cos it only does about 1000 miles a year. It ain't because apart from the 60 miles appx. I use it for work (two return trips a year on average) it is all for pleasure no purpose whatsoever other than pure enjoyment. That can never be green

Reminds me of the joke about the Invisible Man and Superman

Superman is flying over Metropolis keeping his eyes vigilant for anything that he may be of need. Suddenly, a naked figure laying on top of a roof in a complete spread eagle position catches his eye. He has super vision after all. Then he realized that it is his girlfriend Lois Lane! He pondered this for a short minute and decided he may swoop down there, do some super fast and fun “super-action” and swoop out. He is faster than a bullet so of course Lois wouldn’t even know he was ever there.
Suddenly - a very fast wind and loud swoosh noise catches Lois’s attention and she says “What on Earth was that?”. The Invisible Man says “I have no idea but my @$$ is killing me”.

Heinz tomato soup for my dinner. It had a use by date the end of August. I brought it in on Friday only to find it was that old you need a tin opener thing to get in.

Tin opener fetched today and soup consumed. It was a bucket sized can and I am feeling rather full. Most likely be $h1771ng through the eye of a needle all day now (or some other strange thing) well all that liquid has to go somewhere??

I am quite partial myself. That and chicken (not together) are simply the best. That large tin was rather a bit too much.

No stomach rupture though. :p

Maybe that pesky bolt that won't come out can be filled and ruptured with a large tin of soup :aargh4:

I don't often use ":aargh4:" arghh smiley.
