mycarsavw's top tip of the day;

If you do decide to warm your mince pie in the microwave might I suggest something a little more subtle than 30 seconds at full power.

You know how those old really thin plastic cups act like superconductors when you put tea in them - well, imagine that, x 1,000,000,000 :aargh4:

Stinger!! :crying:

Errm, do you mean the thin plastic cups than burn burn your finger prints off? Polystyrene's actually an excellent insulator. Sorry I'll take my professor head off & bugger off now! :p

Doh, yes, I mean those.

The ones that were big in t'eighties in those vending machines you found everywhere. They pumped out water that would take your skin off if you splashed a bit on your arm.

Morning folks, not entered into here as late. There are going to be redundancies at work. Fortunately for us only a small number but they have to come from somewhere, not sure if IT is a little over crowded at the moment http://www.windowsguide.org/forum/images/smilies/anxious.gif

A lot of companies are just using the current problems as an excuse to cut staff. If it had been two years ago they would have had a lot of explaining to do, now all they have to say is “well, in the current climate…”.

they have it across the our 2 uk sites too, but only office staff, 150 over 2 sites, peterborough being the main axe wound, many duplicate jobs over the two sites dealing with same products, sales etc. shop floor jobs are safe seeing as 300 assemblers at where i work made the company 120m profit :biglaugh: we make bigger engines than they do, ner ner ner ner ner :biglaugh:

We make semiconductors and most go to GM, Samsung and Hella. They are just not placing orders for obvious reasons. Our manual technology staff who operate testers and move wafers around are worst hit. Almost 1 in 2 are being made redundant whereas technical staff are only being reduced by 7%. I reckon IT will lose 1 or 2. I think I will be OK this time (Paul breathes a sigh of relief) but that may not be the end. Probably going to go to a reduced working day week too.

Really bad isn't it. :(

I don't think its long until redundancies kick in where I work. It is a property renting company, and there are so little rents being done and at such low prices, it cannot be sustained for much longer surely.

My own business is steaming along, yet to feel any sort of pain from the credit crunch. Unfortunately I only work for myself two days a week and weekends (I would make more money if I worked for myself all week). Property maintenance is the trade to be in at the moment.

Unfortunately my Transporter van used for my business isn't steaming along so well... :(

Afternoon all

Talking of credit crunch and redundancies...I recruit in Engineering & Construction and every day - literally- for the past 2 weeks, I've had calls from my clients saying they were letting staff go and if i can help them. Its tough times.

Other than that - how are we all? I feel like i've not been on here for ages!

Talking of recruitment and the credit crunch I've been in touch with a few companies down in Cumbria over the last couple of weeks or so. Not one has got back to me.

I think I'm going to struggle for work in Telecomms at the moment judging by this response. :(

I've also been doing a lot of Linux stuff at work so (slowly) I'm starting to get the hang again of the basic commands and navigation. I wouldn't mind going into that if I can find a job in Cumbria. Anyone any ideas?

I hope no one here gets made redundant. Like Crasher said, companies are just using it as an excuse to get rid of staff. Everyones safe for now here as we're a large American multi-national company, but I've heard a few of my mates say there are redundancies where they're working at the moment. :(

Ah, you could put in a good word for me! :p

The contract for the new Aircraft Carriers will ensure some work there for a while. I'm hopefully looking to get a good network based job in Telecomms, but it seems that work in that sector is hard to find in Cumbria anyway, so it's really difficult now this economy has gone **** up.

I'd imagine BAE would be looking for experienced employees though? I'd more than likely need training on whatever I'd be getting employed to do in the near future.

I'd imagine my next step would be recruitment agencies though. I was thinking of popping into a couple in Carlisle on Saturday.

I've never used Solaris before but always fancied it. Might see if I can give it a twirl. Now that I'm getting the hang of linux again I'm finding it much more satisfying when you get something to work, as opposed to Windows.

Ahhhhh, don't you just love Audi main dealers.

They split my bonnet release cable and are now claiming it has been split for a while and trying to make me pay for it. My OSF headlight is also full of condensation again (another £600) and my ARB's are possible on their way out. I have large cracking noises on tight turns or when my car drives straight over varying gradients. :(

On an even worse note, Audi replaced my drivers door lock to fix my faulty alarm, but it turned out it was the bonnet latch and wiring. Is there anyway I can claim back the money for the drivers door lock? Or prove that Audi split the bonnet cable?

The ARB's and bushes may be paid for with a claim to the local council(s) for these really bad roads with potholes. As I travel through two different councils I might be able to claim off both (even if just for half the costs). The roads are all really bad and full of potholes. There has also been a chunk of tarmac cut up for no reason and just a metal plate plonked ontop, which has been knocked away due to the HGV's. :s Health and Safety first and all that!

Any one think I have a case for any of these problems?

the handling of the passat got tested last night as a van towing a trailer with a car on pulled out on me and proceeded to pull out really wide as i was about 20m away, braked and it skewed the car left cos of the camber, which turned it kerbwards, i let off the brakes and swerved the other way, then it swung back, going past the van and trailer with horn blaring at about 45 degrees pointing towards him, kinda glad it was a wide ish road or i'd have been toast, he then jammed his high beam on as if i was in the wrong, i had 2 options, take evasive action or slam into the back of him, i chose the best route i think!! stupid van driver!!!! i was doing 60 on a 60mph limit road by the way.

its snowing again!! i spy a night off work, gonna go bed in a min and hope 3 feet of the stuff falls by 6pm :biglaugh:

the handling of the passat got tested last night as a van towing a trailer with a car on pulled out on me and proceeded to pull out really wide as i was about 20m away, braked and it skewed the car left cos of the camber, which turned it kerbwards, i let off the brakes and swerved the other way, then it swung back, going past the van and trailer with horn blaring at about 45 degrees pointing towards him, kinda glad it was a wide ish road or i'd have been toast, he then jammed his high beam on as if i was in the wrong, i had 2 options, take evasive action or slam into the back of him, i chose the best route i think!! stupid van driver!!!! i was doing 60 on a 60mph limit road by the way.

Not quite tested but realised how good FWD is compared to RWD in these conditions. Not as much fun but fun is not always what you want. I took Mrs QV's MX5 for petrol last night. Wow very tricky in the snow/ice :p

Happy New Year folks!

Boreeedddddd already in 2009.... :(

I'm bored at work. +3-4 degrees outside and no hope of snow. It should have snowed when I was in Cumbria yesterday. I would not have been unhappy with an extended holiday. Paid or unpaid. :(

Whats everyone doing to relieve their boredom?

I remember back in 96 I think when I worked in Barrow-in-Furness that Winter they had snow, Barrow does not get snow. I had (at the time) brand new 414i, you would not believe the number of cars abandoned on the A590 some 4x4's. I got to the motorway and it was barrier to barrier snow :yikes: People were driving in herds but as it took me so long to get there I just took off. Very eerie and very scary. Left Barrow at 4pm and arrived home 11pm.

-5°C Monday night...

36 hours of "snow", numerous crashes on my daily drive, proving that a bit of cold rain makes people forget how to drive completely...

-7°C Tuesday night...

-4°C this morning.

I want more snow!

Not surprised mate, the MX5 has only around 105bhp less than half your RX8. Though the MX5 has no ABS not even Traction Control let alone ESP.

I hate mizzle, give me cold and dry any day

Mizzle is a term used in Devon and Cornwall (http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/cgi-bin/aktframe?TYP=wetter&ART=karte&JJ=xxxx&MM=08&TT=08&TIME=1300&KEY=WES&LANG=en&SORT=1&INT=06) for a combination of fine drenching drizzle or extremely fine rain and thick, heavy saturating mist or fog (http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/reports/wxfacts/Fog-and-Mist.htm). While floating or falling the visible particles of coarse, watery vapor might approach the form of light rain. Mizzle is especially thick in upland areas, like its Scottish Highlands counterpart Scotch Mist, and it is particulary associated with a moist tropical maritime airstream (http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/reports/wxfacts/Air-masses-and-their-sources.htm).
Mizzle is known for being capable of soaking you in a matter of minutes and the feeling is best described as if one would stand under a Fire Brigade fine nozzle. The word itself derived from the Frisian mizzelen meaning - what a surprise - drizzle. However, a day with mizzle is usually characterised by dull and depressing weather and some sort of permanent twilight, or 'dimpsey' as another good old west country word puts it.

Felt like putting the Octavia on a ship the last couple of days. Right front alloy wheel locking bolt wouldn't come off. Bugger! :aargh4:

About £30 in drill bits later, 24 hours and a few expletives aimed at the wheel in question and it is off. :approve:

There is a bit of damage to the wheel, but they are going to be refurbed anyway once the weather is a bit warmer.

Interesting take on the failure of capitalism & what may come of it by Robert Peston from the BBC:

If he's right it sounds a lot better to me!!

Police said the vehicle was travelling at high speed when the collision happened in Limbach-Oberfrohna on Sunday.
The 23-year-old driver missed a bend in the road and drove through a railing before careering up an embankment and flying 35 metres through the air.
Emergency workers had to free the man who was taken to hospital for treatment.

Might of scuppered my car plans a little this year too. I am going to see how the market goes (both work and cars) and make my decision later in the year.

4 days since anyone has been on here!

anyway, quick story from last night. The missus is away, so I took myself off to bed early to watch a film.

Hear this car outside. Then i hear the windows shake..........look out - its an R8 sat picking up my neighbour!

All i can say is: WHAT A CAR and WHAT A NOISE!! I've been around Astons, 911s, etc, but the sound of this thing tops them all!

Had another petty row at work about using the internet, difference is this time I wasn't taking the hour lunch break I'm entitled to & certainly wasn't spending an hour a day on here!! He didn't even know I'd been on the forum, in fact where or when I'd used the net! I've developed a habit of clearing all the web history after my anti-virus found a Trojan lurking in the temporary internet files at home. Me clearing cookies is apparently evidence of internet abuse!! It's nice to know that innocent until proven guilty applies in the workplace... I did point out that I virtually never take a lunch break which resulted in a few seconds of silence to then be told to just go out for lunch instead. So I do. Ever last 60 minutes of it. They now get slightly less out of me every day.

Anyway, back to Combover's R8 sound post! I did a track day in an Aston V8 Vantage a few months ago & there was an R8, A lamborghini, a couple of Ferraris etc. & the R8 pooped on them all for sound! That car makes an amazing racket!

Do you clear the index.dat file?

If not read this http://www.acesoft.net/delete_index.dat_files.htm

All the info is still there, so you could copy it and then show him/her that you haven't been on non work related sites in office time. It may be worth keeping a copy for safe keeping ;)

Sounds like you are in a small firm with no content filtering....you can always jump on an explicit site and say your upset by it...its the employers duty to protect you from inappropriate sites :D

I've seen a few R8's but not fortunate enough to hear one :(

Got to say, the one that was pulling out of Stockport Audi as I also exited after ordering a n/s mirror, looked and sounded the mutt's nuts. BTW, is the V10 version out yet? This one seemed to have a few extra vents and things on the side... very nice! :approve:

Mine hardly ever goes wrong (the car that is), at the moment I have a rotational squeak in the steering column when it is hot that I have never come across before, a faulty headlight adjuster motor and a slightly misaligned tailgate that is chipping the new paint on the tailgate. I am going to try and deal with those this week.

Oh eck here we go...

Mine has in the past had a misaligned tailgate, there is chipped paint on the lower edge. It has had a mild rear end shunt in the past as there is evidence of new paint (they painted over the ID label in the spare wheel well too :aargh4:).

Anyway... mine is now running! Its back from the dead! Started eventually, I had to buy a diesel priming pump to make it finally take on fuel.

I didn't expect to have to do that... I've never used one of them on a modern car before.

Crasher

Mine hasn’t had a rear end shunt as far as I can tell but the tailgate was rusty under the number plate light cover and under the glass (a very common Octavia 1 Estate problem) and so I stripped the tailgate and removed the glass so my paint shop could paint it. They removed the tailgate to do it and ever since it won’t fit so I need to adjust it.

If they won’t pull fuel on a VEP TDI, spray a little brake cleaner up the intake to get it running, just misting a tiny amount across the intake to keep it running and after about 15 seconds it will pull the fuel through. I have to go and do a VEP TDI Golf 4 now with the same problem after running out of fuel.

The amount of "common problems" you know about is amazing. I guess that's what having your own garage does to you. ;)

So brake cleaner was what I should have done... I tried spraying WD-40 down the intake just to try and get it to fire, but it still wouldn't. :Blush2:

Happy Birthday guys! :)

I haven't been on for a while! Been busy for once! :o

Glad to hear the Octavia is coming on! You got any new pics of it now it's had some work done to it? :)

I've been back and forth to the dealers myself. S3 has been getting some things done. I now have a cracking coming from the suspension on any change in camber on the road, and all the suspension seems to crack independantly. What do you guys think? Broken springs, or dodgy bushes? CV joints? :s I'm stumped. My best guess is broken springs as it sounds like that!

I also have a ticking noise coming from under the bonnet. You hear it most whilst idle, but only because the engine revs are low. At higher revs I can't hear it often but I'm pretty sure it's still there. I thought it might be the wastegate? :s

Another year older…another year closer to death. With the way this cess pit of a country is going that may be a blessing, or the end result!

I hope you didn’t spray the WD-40 upstream of the AMM.

I’m 45 by the way you old git!

OD, 4 wheel drive Golf/A3’s are sods for broken springs, our 4M broke one last week and when we took it out is was broken twice! We wanted to fit a pair but there was only one in the UK. The ticking may be the EVAP canister and that is correct.

Probably a blessing! :p Although for me life is ticking over without cause for concern just now!

Can all 4 springs break at roughly the same time then? I was getting a cracking noise off the front suspension, which resulted in the steering rack being replaced on warranty, typically not solving anything. The bushes, ARBs, etc HAVE been checked and have been ok'd. I'm not convinced they checked the springs and now want my car for 3 days to look at...

You say the ticking is correct? As in correct for normal running or for signs it is wearing out? It never used to do that and it's quite loud now, coming from the near side of the engine bay.

I'm a little wary of these noises as I know the car was sitting for several months without being run before I bought the car and I've now covered 12k in 4 months, which is the same as it's previous amount for a whole year before hand! The car has only just hit 60k, and apart from these two issues is still running beautifully! :)

Thanks Crasher!

OD.

If all four springs broke simultaneously I would be shocked and would want to know what you had been doing.

It could be the front anti roll bar or even the rear one, the sleeves under the bushes fail due to corrosion of the bar and they make a horrid noise.

The ticking I was thinking of starts and stops as the ECU decides and the unit is on thee right hand side of the engine bay just in front of the coolant tank/PAS reservoir, tucked into the inner wing so not what you are hearing on the left hand side.

As for the double posting error, it wasn’t me it was my PC and that’s my excuse which I am sticking with! :1zhelp:

Well I've just been out on some lovely back roads! :D There must be a broken spring on the front from the sounds of it. The noise from the rear has stopped, so leads me to believe it just doesn't like a fully laden boot. Any ideas on that one? :s

The ticking noise I mentioned earlier stopped when I switched off my A/C so I think it's something to do that. There is a more pronounced ticking though which doesn't stop and I never realised it is coming from near the coolant tank. Should I be worried about that noise as I've never noticed it before!

I don't drive the car that hard and I always look after it. The cracking noise and squeaking has always been there since I got the car although the dealer said they would get to the bottom of it. Over 6 months later they still haven't, although thankfully are still willing to pay to fix it! I wonder if they'll still pay if it turns out to be costly! I never race over these stupid speed "humps" (more like mountains these days!) either, so it's not because I abuse the car. Infact, I treated it to a full Zymol 3 weeks ago, although another 600 miles has made it dirtier than a w*ores knickers. After curry night.

Hope all goes well OD, its a lovely car you have and in the days where nobody seems to have much money unless you have a) an oil refinery, or b) have very rich relatives, repairs are the last thing you want.

BTW OD, did you think the Zymol wax did a really good job? My son has just bought me a Halfords rotary, Farecla G10 paste and a Meguiars clay kit with Meguiars wax. I also saw some Zymol wax in Halfords the other day and nearly bought it.

BTW Crasher, the WD40 was sprayed after the AMM, not into it, so no problems there.

The Zymol did a great job. I used Zymol car shampoo, then another Zymol product to remove the wax already on it. After that I used Meguiars clay kit to remove any crap on the pain work. Then polished it and then the Zymol wax went on. What a difference! I might have missed out a stage, I'm sure I did something else... Amazing how well it worked, although you notice EVERY stone chip, etc after that! I had to get a touch up paint!

Definitely worth it though! :D Now... my oil refinery needs finishing! ;) £1k already spent on the S3 and at least twice that subsidised by the garage we bought the car off! Thankfully we had a decent manager who is willing to keep to his word! Good chap!

I also noticed on Thursday afternoon my exhaust has a small hole on the underside of the car before it reaches the cat, so that'll need doing soon! I could smell and see hot exhaust gas! :( Makes it sound a little more growly though! ;)

Thanks for that OD, when I'm finished cleaning it I'm going to be staring at that scrape on the front bumper. Yes the same scrape I mentioned in this thread months ago... its still not been sorted! :o

Regarding the exhaust, if fitting a genuine one it will cost a fortune because the cat has to be replaced too, its one pipe. If you're keeping it, its probably better going for a genuine one though. With a new cat it will sound the mutt's nuts again! :D

Eek! I can get a remap too for just slightly more than that! £990 for a Milltek and a remap from MRC Tuning (http://www.mrctuning.com/products.php?do=engine&brand=Audi&model=S3) in Banbury!

c) A labour MP with an expenses form...

:biglaugh: Wonder if I can find a nice MP! Gordon Brown is a Scot too, isn't he? :p

The cat for a 2002 S3 with a BAM 225PS engine is 8N0 254 400 BX. 8N0 254 400 AX is for an AUL 209PS engine in left hand drive only! Can’t tell you the price until tomorrow though.

Well hopefully it isn't as much but I have the feeling it is still going to be really expensive! :(

Christ mate, don’t they realise that could push some people over the edge! Can you ask the bank to cover your **** whilst it is sorted out? If it is proved to be someone else’s fault, who covers YOUR interest/stress costs?

I know what you say about stress costs, but I'd most likely be ******* in the wind.

I have a Virgin One mortgage, so the cost will be covered until I can get it right. But as for the stress its causing me, I wouldn't get a penny out of anyone.

I've spent just short of £300 on the Skoda this month, so in effect this month I've got no money coming in to pay for food, gas, electric, water, telephone, internet, tv or anything. Married with 2 teenage kids, both with birthdays in March as well. But no, nobody in positions of power think about these things. :aargh4:

What the company doesn't know, this is the final straw. It is their mistake, and as soon as the wife is back in work, my resignation is going in.

This country is in a dreadful mess. Go out and commit a serious crime and all your worries and expenses will be covered but for god's sake don't get caught speeding doing it or they will throw the key away and also make sure you do the crime in a low Co2 car and everything will be OK as you will have saved the world-ohh and turn the TV off standby as you leave home.

Hit the nail on the head. The wife was done for speeding the other week, 48 in a 40. Oh so the Govt got another £60 of me for that too. Daylight robbery.

c) A labour MP with an expenses form...

D) A city banker with a big bonus....:p

There is something very very wrong with this country if you never do a days work then the goverment seem to bend over backwards to help you but if you've paid your taxes for years and run into trouble and need help then your bottom of a very long list. Places like Gurnsey have the right idea if you aren't at work andare able to work to get any money form the state you hav to clean the beeches etc.

Crasher, can you double check that exhaust part for me please mate? I'm hoping it can just be patched but until I get it on a ramp it's a little difficult to see.

2002 S3 BAM. The hole is on closer look at the exhaust fumes being expelled, about the same place as the rear seats begin.

Fingers crossed it's not a new cat as well!

Thanks Crasher! Depending on what it looks like when it gets up on the ramp then I might just bite the buller and go for the Milltek with a remap. :)

I need a service for the S3 too! Not cheap is it! Sod's law everything happens at once! :(

Much appreciated mate!

Hey guys nice to see you keeping the thread going. Me'n Mrs QV having some personal issues at the mo so been away for awhile.

One way to vent ones problems is driving the car a little aggressively all safe and at legal limits of course. Fantastic handling car the Passat despite it's size. Dunno why they bother with ESP, or maybe I am such a crap driver and 30mph is not that fast :p
