We rarely have anyone else sitting in the back of the car but I always buy a 5 door for convenience of throwing stuff like coats etc. in the back! My friend will not buy a 3 door as he insists that in an accident it is very difficult for back seat passengers to get out of a 3 door. Of course there is the hatch if they can go backwards but in a way I think he has a point.

Exactly. It is the small things that make a 5dr so convenient. When I go on days out, I like to throw those things on the back seat, that I am going to need on a regular basis and that I don't want to keep on having to open the hatch to retrieve.
Obviously, if I am leaving the car unattended, then items will be placed in the boot out of the view of passers by.

I have already ordered my car and changed from a 3 to a 5 dr and now I feel like changing it back to a 3dr.
gone for white, ACC, 18's, 510+dyno, camera, lux, storage, tyre indicator.
    gotta wait til xmas though.....
Personally I think a 3 door will look better than a 5 door (and £600 is not an insignificant amount to save). However, there are many convincing reasons to get a 5 door. I once had a 3 door hatchback and my mate who was in the back suddenly asked me stop the car as he didn’t feel well (not due to my driving I might add). I stopped the car but he didn’t quite get out in time… I’m sure if it had been a 5 door, things would have worked out better. Needless to say, when my Golf turns up in the next week or so it will have 5 doors.

Personally if I was in the market for a 3 door Golf GT/GTi/GTD etc. and didn’t need the extra space (if there is any?) I think I’d be very tempted to get a Scirocco.

Cheaper purchase price, but what about resale ? (i.e. total cost of ownership)

Golfs are a family car, so 5 doors usually preferable ?

Yes, it does. The way that I view it is that the rear two doors are just another option: you can have those, or something else. For example, you can add an RCD-510 and rear-view camera and still have change from £600. I'd prefer the better radio over the two doors.

I have 3 teenage kids so I'm the taxi of the house so 5 doors was a no brainer although I do admit I think 3 doors look better especially in the GTi's.
I could have been tempted in to the 3 door scirocco but it only has 4 seats.

Interesting replys, I think I'm going to leave it a 5dr and try and forget I ever ordered it!
Waiting 14 weeks is no fun but in the mean time I have a DSG 170 A3 to cane until then. Why they didnt put the 17'' wheel design as the 18'' I'll never know....roll on xmas......

Here's a question that will probably have been covered but hey, no harm done...Can you get a 510 unit with camera and DAB?

I believe not. I'm finding the camera pretty useful btw, but I would have liked DAB too!

5 door for me, too. Just for the coats & shopping on the back seat.

No you can't have the camera and DAB together. Must use the same port or something.
