I stopped the car but he didn’t quite get out in time… I’m sure if it had been a 5 door, things would have worked out better. Needless to say, when my Golf turns up in the next week or so it will have 5 doors.

Personally if I was in the market for a 3 door Golf GT/GTi/GTD etc. and didn’t need the extra space (if there is any?) I think I’d be very tempted to get a Scirocco.
I agree. The only reason i didn't go for the scirocco was i needed 5 doors.

It depends on your requirements and preferences.

    I have a 3 door Golf because:
    1. I don't need easy access to the rear seats as they will be unoccupied for 99.9% of the time.
    2. To me 3 doors look better however the 5 door Leon and Civic look good as they tend to keep the clean lines.
    3. Approx £600 cheaper,why pay extra for something I don't need.
    4. I carry shopping, coats etc in the boot.
    5. 'WhatCar's depreciation index shows the 5 door to be worth only £285 approx more than 3 doors after 3 years so why pay more if you don,t need to although 5 doors would be easier to sell to a private family buyer.

Again,it's down to your requirements,if you need easy access to the rear seats it's got to be 5 door.

    Regards,John.

    I agree with you, John.

In particular I believe the 3dr looks better (imho).

But you have missed one thing that was crucial for me - the 3dr isn't practical! It swaps that out for for extra style. I'm not a family man, and I don't want to look like one. And that gives the 3dr a certain chic that works for me!

Oh, and the Scirocco wasn't on the company car list.

    100% agreed.

3 doors are a pain when you need to get ANYTHING in the back seats.

Accept a date, who will appreciate the flowing good looks of a 3dr much more than a practical set of rear doors!! :P

However, if you're on a date with a tall blonde with legs up to her armpits, then she might appreciate how much easier it is to open the front doors of a 5 door car when you're parked in a cinema carpark.

The 3 door does look nice, but the doors are about 20 feet* longer than the front doors of the 5 door.

    *Slight exaggeration there....

The 5 door looks like a family car to me, and given that I'm a youngster, I much prefer the looks of the 3 door, and don't need the practicality of a 5 door yet.

Cynically - as a youngster - why aren't you in something retro cool like a Mk1 Gti then
