Sorry to say but this is an extremely common problem on the ARL engine, you need a new turbo. If you leave it too long it can cause the turbine spindle to snap which makes the compressor explode and throw debris right through into the engine which can result in piston damage.

I have had ARL’s doing this since they were only 2 years old, the turbo is prone to failing and when you do get smoke it is probably too late as that will be when it completely fails. What was the fault code number you were getting, 17965?

cant remember to honest, will be going on another mates computer saturday[vag]. do you think its just a part of the turbo or is it not worth messing around and just change the lot, is it worth taking off and cleaning? are these additives any good? have had a good read of the postings on here but not found one about juddering yet. Is a new turbo worth the extra compared to a recon? many questions i know but my mates up to his eyes at the mo and i just want some ideas. many thanks

On ARL’s with the code 17965 and with juddering I have had no success with removal and cleaning or with the Innotec cleaning system, in fact these are the only turbo’s that have failed to respond to cleaning for me. I only fit genuine VAG exchange recon units supplied by a VW dealer (or by a TPS in my case) as they come with a two year labour inclusive warranty. If someone wishes me to fit something else it is on the strict understanding that ANY issues are not my responsibility, which shows how little confidence I have in non VAG supplied units. A VAG exchange unit is £740 inc. VAT.

That code is from a fault code read.

Ask yourself why the car was sold. About 50% of the customers I give a nasty surprise to say “I will trade it in” or “Um gona flog it on, den it be sum’s prob nut mine”. These are also the people who scream blue murder if someone sells them a faulty car. Hypocrisy, one of the human races less savoury traits!

Absolutely agreed, knowingly selling something with a known fault and not informing the buyer goes beyond cheating, perhaps more like evil.
