i had a problem with my golf 2001 gt tdi.
When i was drivig the car oreheated and computer dislayed `check coolant`.
when e checked it i saw that the coolant was spilled out of the tank because the retur pipe from the engine was creating pressure.
i called the roadside rescue and they said is the water pump.
sent to the garage and water pump was ok and they dignosed it with head gasket.
sent to another garage because they asked too much, and after chcking the car they said head gasket is ok.
then they chacked it with diagnostic tool and noth came up.
then today he checked the thermostat but still ok.

Anyone got any idea whats wrong with my car?

roadside assistance says water pump, one garage says head gasket, another says niether water pump or head gasket. they have all seen the car,we haven't, but if you are loosing coolant through the tank it has to be coming via the pressure cap,so the pressure cap may need replacing( both garages could have told you that-if the cap has failed the pressure in the system may have been lost causing the coolant to overheat).the thermostat may have failed causing the system to overheat, thus increased pressure blowing the relief cap .
i can only suggest that you take the car to a reputable garage that knows whats it's doing, because all of the above, plus faulty temp sender/ fan motor could cause the overheating/loss of coolant.
they all have the same effect(loosing coolant),but show themselves in much different ways,
(temp of different hoses etc). it's impossible to diagnose without seeing the car--two garages
have seen it,roadside assistance have seen it, and none agree. suggest another garage mate.
first time i was up a ladder i was down a well
    4th cog,--two to go

    thanks for the reply,

I changed the pressure cap, thermostat, coolant temp sensor, new cam belt and had the car scaned and no fault codes came up.
bank balance been goin down and no results with the car.

dont know where to go next.
i had a suggestion that the head might be cracked but there is no water in the oil, or oil in the water.

Well as long as they did that is OK as far as impeller security goes but the bearing could still fail before the next belt interval in 4years/60k miles. For how much a pump costs (£37.21 genuine) I would have replaced it to be sure. It is beginning to look like you have a failed head gasket. Remember, if the head is distorted, VW say it cannot be skimmed.

    thanks for reply crasher.

the mechanic opened the car and he said the is not the head gasket.
after he donne the cam belt, thermostat and some small things and couldnt find the problem he suggested that it could be the cylinder head cracked.
    but he is not sure.
there is not any water in the oil or oil in the water.
is there any way i could check to be sure if the head is cracked?

I have been driving the car over 600 miles since I had this problem, and keeping it on 2000 revs doesnt spill out the water. there is still air goin to the water tank from return pipe but not as much to force the water out.

my thought is that the garage who checked the water pump did not check the impeller properly, (I think) but I could be wrong.

    any suggestions.?
