    Guys,

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread but I noticed to day that it is possible to switch off the auto wipers so they act as normal intermittent wipers. It is under driver assist in the MMI but I haven't had a chance to test it yet.

I would like to help in your research but today I went over 25K miles, the car is 17 months old and I have only had the wipers on twice! Southern California presently has a water table that is 6% of normal and I don't anticipate seeing any rain until at least October. Maybe I'm not the best candidate to assist in your evaluation

Maybe you could do some testing shortly after you've been through a car wash..... Goodness knows they SHOULD be outlawed - they always are here in the UK when we have a draught.

And I NEVER user carwashes in the UK 'cos you might as well sand blast your car but my brother lives in Northern Califonia and swears by a touchless high pressure one he uses.. and his S4 looks really good after 4 years or so...

I know what I would like to tell you but I will probably be banned!!! Have had a pretty rubbish winter here so the break in wet and windy days is badly needed. Absolutely no chance of a water shortage here. My car is a year old and the wipers are needing replaced! Not jealous at all.

I park under cover at work and in the garage at home and I haven't washed my car in about a year. Every week I clean it with detailers spray and micro-fiber towels. The main problem here is dust, pollen and bugs going splat on the front. The last wash it had was at the dealer and when I picked it up it was dustier than when I took it in.

I just wanted to update my input to this thread:

My car is 10 days shy of its 2 year anniversary and the count on the wiper use is up to 7! BTW - 3 of those were for a mist accumulation going through a mist. It was 89 F yesterday and still no rain.

I think that it's a great feature though, if only it would rain

Having recently swapped to a Nissan, I can honestly say that the Audi auto wipers are far superior - the Qashqai's wipers vary from not seeing the build up of rain on the screen when it is only light rain, to going into uber-mental mode on occasions once it does spot the light rain.

Mine used to come on when the car in front on the motorway squirted his screen and in the lightest of rain. Both dry out in seconds and the screens no wet enough to be lubricated for the wipe. Long since deactivated in MMI, but it would make so much sense if your first wipe set the threshold for activation.

Now I'm going to have to work out how to deactivate the rear one when selecting reverse. The rear screen is often caked in road film this time of year and must be quite aggressive on the blades. Again, it would be better if the Audi logic thought about squirting some screen wash first.

I have a sedan - no rear wiper but dirt is rarely the issue so a smart system would be to have various parameters to set for different people and conditions. I.E. front sensitivity, rear sensitivity, first flick-wipe = sensitivity and squirt prior or with control. Why not make it the best available instead of just being the same inadequate system that most cars have?
Personally, mine work fine but my auto wiper count is only up to 8 times in 2 years!
