    Hi all
I am almost ready to order (still debating gearbox and colour) a new Black edition A6 2.0 tdi ultra.
I currently use an old ipod classic 120gb in my BMW but only have volume control over it, track selections etc have to be physically done on the ipod.
I have been trying to research what my options will be for playing music in the new car but am getting confused especially with the Black having the Bose system.
Any advice and information much appreciated, please remember I know nothing about the Audi system as I have been BMW for a good few years
    Thanks
    Dave

An iPod classic should operate fully via the AMI and allow you to do everything you want. I have used an original iPod Mini in my pre-FL car with no trouble at all. Best suggestion would be to take it to a dealer and ask to test it in a facelift car. The presence of Bose only affects the speakers and has no impact on the functionality of the MMI system and thus AMI. Remember as an alternative you could copy your music to a SD Card (Audi says you can only go to 32Gb but in reality you can go to at least 128Gb) and use that instead

I actually tried my new iPod Classic 160GB through my AMI in my A6 BE Ultra two weekends ago and got a message saying it was incompatible. My iPod Touch works fine though. Full control through the Audi MMI as said.

And for what its worth, personally I dont like the Ultra engine/S Tronic gearbox combination, I find the engine struggles around motorway speeds if you want to overtake quickly etc, if I was ordering again I'd defo go manual.

Worth trying to restart the iPod whilst connected to AMI. IIRC your car is a pre-facelift so the Classic should be fine

All models support Bluetooth streaming too, but control is limited to next/previous track. If you have the tech pack you also have the option of wirelessly playing any music on your phone via the Audi Music Stream App.
Personally I use an SD card - cheap to buy, no reliance on any external device, takes up almost no space and starts playing instantly.

Pretty sure that FL cars now officially support SDXC cards - i.e. those greater than 32GB. Pre-FL cars do support >32GB but only if you format the card as FAT32 - SDXC cards are supplied formatted as exFAT, which won't work. Formatting the card to FAT32 is very easy but you do need to download a suitable program to do it.

I have found one issue using a 64GB SD card in my 2012 A6 - it has the Tech Pack with a 20GB Jukebox that you can copy songs to - this is useful because you can then search tracks by voice. I've noticed that certain files on my SD card will not copy to the Jukebox, but the same files will copy when saved on a USB stick; I've come to the conclusion that any files stored past the first 32GB of the SD card can't be read by the Jukebox, even though they can be played OK.

This is in contrast to the 2013 A4 courtesy car I had which refused to play huge numbers of files on the same 64GB SD card - that was really limited to 32GB!

Seems a bit of a strange comment. If using a manual I take it you would change down to get the required acceleration? So why not knock the S-tronic into manual/use the paddles to do the same? Or use the kick-down, though I've never been a great fan of that approach.

The whole point of an auto box is that you shouldn't need to manually change gears. I just feel that the revs are too low and theres no power when the car is at 70mph in 7th gear. Many a time I've had to manually change down a cog or two when its in cruise control and I travel up a hill to stop the car slowing down (and not just by 2 or 3 mph), to me that shouldn't happen. My last car was a DSG'd Octavia vRS and I had no such gripes, that was a splendid engine/box combination.

The A6 BE itself is a thing of beauty, however I'm far from impressed with the 'Ultra' package. Audis MPG claim should be challenged in a court of law, I'm not a fan of 7 gears when the top gear is imcapable of acceleration at speeds of below 90mph and any saving of road tax is offset by the need to top up with Ad Blue every few thousand miles.

You need to use the correct AMI cable - it will work if you do. I think it's the blue collar one.

I have an iPod Classic 80Gb connected to my car and I have full control of it. The blue cable doesn't allow album artwork to display on the MMI screen though. I have a red collar cable that did support album artwork from my old iPhone 4, but the iPod Classic isn't supported using this cable.

I see where you are coming from. I loved my DSG Passat estate but even with its 6 gears and lower top gear than the Ultra it would get caught out by being in too high a gear for hills and changing up at inappropriate times etc. Of course, unlike us, the "auto" gear box can't see the road ahead!
