Just had first service of car back end of August and out of curiosity checked the service computer and it's stating 8500/340 days to service even though it's less than a month and 500 miles since the service.

My wife's 2004 passat 4motion 140ps does similiar trips and she gets about 20000 miles between services.

Is this something specific to the 170 and is it an indication of some issue?

It's been set to fixed service intervals which is every 10000 miles.your wife's car is on the long life service program which is every 20000.that's not an indication of a problem with your car.

I asked them to set it back to long life intervals (garage I bought it off serviced it but I suspect had reset using the dashboard reset which I believe defaults to fixed intervals). It is much hassle to change back to long life?

I wouldn't know I'm afraid.but if you plan on keeping the car for some time why not have it serviced every 10000 miles??that's what I do anyway.

If it's long life the next service interval is dynamic (to an extent) and will adjust this value based on (think this is right) your last ten trips. It won't set an inital value until you have passed 300 miles since the last service. After a couple of longish motorway runs my next service indicator has miles / days added, whereas a few short trips will shorten it.

Did you get car from main dealer with a warranty? They may well have set it to fixed servicing until warranty expires. Once warranty expires ask to set back to Long Life if that's what you want.

Unless it's had the correct long life oil (despite being apparently reset to the fixed service interval) you can't do that. It must have long life oil consistently if it's to be used on the long life intervals. IIRC once more than 1/2 litre of the non long-life oil has been added to the engine that's it... fixed interval is all you've got.

My B7 was bought from Audi, serviced by Audi with 2 free services at 10000 miles. They set clock to fixed servicing interval, appeared to be 9000 miles. Long Life oil used throughout. At end of 'free' servicing interval set to Long Life currently about 18000. No advice otherwise given.

What you are saying though, is that if you don't know exactly what oil has been used throughout the car's life, you should always go with fixed interval servicing ?

That's my understanding. If long life oil's always been used, you're fine. If there's any doubt, it needs to be fixed intervals. AFAIK... someone who knows about these things properly will be along shortly, I'm sure...

I get about 18,000 between my long life services... I'm thinking of using the interval services for my next car though as it is meant to be better for the car
