Not sure if this should be in here, but bear with me......

I bought my 55 plate 1.9TDI PD 100 BORA, from the car people in september 06, with 13000 miles on the clock. They told me they had done a full service and used longlife oil, and the car would tell me when the next service was due.

Turned my car ignition on this morning and a message comes up with "service due in 2000 miles". Having only covered 3500 miles from when i picked it up, i thought it a bit strange that an apparantly a longlife service only lasts 5500 miles.

I came to the conclusion that when they serviced it, they didn't reset the ecu. So i took it back to the car people today and they cleard the message for me.

Now, when i got the car back, there was a print-out on the passenger seat that had the directions to reset the service message, and a disclaimer that said if my vehicle was on a Long Life services it can only be done with diagnostic equipment, and i think they have reset as normal service (if that makes sense)

My question's are ....(eventually) how will this affect the car's ECU, and is the "normal" reset just a counter for milage on time.

Thanks for any help in advance.....

right... quickly... the reset option you have there is for the normal service.. if on long life you need to do use VAG-COM (or VW's own) and set it to long lfe...

You have 2 options.... one go back and get them to set it correclty... or step 2... leave it for now... and then wait it states service due.. and then reset it again..

Then when it goes in for the serivce get them to reset it correclty.

Normaly service is about 10k... longlife 20k.. (MILES)

    Cheers

Ok.. You got my intrest... 20K km.. or miles???

Our longlife here in the states is 10k miles.. but 20k km is about 12k miles well really 12427.42 or so.. VW as been saying that running much over 10k miles seems to cause problems with the oil cooler and oil pump.. And they are loosing engines because the oil pump and cooler getting sludge in them.. We run the VW 505.what ever Oil.. Do you guys have a different oil????

Am I missing some thing here because in my mind oil changes are cheap.. At least the 505 oils VW says to use.. So I am intrested in why you are intrested in pushing as far as you can??? Just an intrest..

20K as miles i meant... "K meaning thousand"...

longlife service = car on the road for longer... thats the only reason...

I thought the long life service intervals were not fixed and the ECU determined when the service was due?

Thats also my understanding, because, the oil sensor determines the quality of the oil at any given time....but also taking into account the period it has been in the engine, (in both miles and time).

20,000 miles is a typical (if not slightley high) estimate of the type of ground you can expect to cover (depending on driving style!!!)

There has been a few detailed responces to my queries in the maintenance section of the forum, under the same heading.
