On two occasions in the last 4 weeks or so, I have parked the car and folded in the mirrors. However, when I have come back to the car and started the engine, I have turned the control to unfold them again and nothing has happened.
By turning the knob into a few other positions the mirrors have eventually opened as though there was a delay. If this continues I will have to take it up with the dealers when it is serviced later this year OR sooner if they fail permanently to unfold.
    Anyone else experienced this?

Yep, same here. I've found that if I've used the 'fold-in' option the best policy is not to touch the 'fold-out' button until I've had the engine running for a few moments.

The entire Golf folding mirror experience, from the very awkward to use control knob to the idiosyncratic operation is poor.

In fact, lately I've not been bothering with the auto option, I just manually fold whichever mirror I feel is at risk.

I've noticed this a couple of times. Doesn't really bother me as long as it still works.
You have to turn the knob to L if you want to dip the mirror to the kerb anyway.
The knob is at hand and easy enough to turn.

    Damn. My cover is blown!

I don't mind having some of these more useful gadgets providing I had the confidence that the dealers could sort out problems of this sort. All they rely upon is their damn VAG COM readouts and if that doesn't show any errrors then, usually their 'fitters' are stumped. Admittedly these cars are too complicated for their own good.

As the others say, they do get a bit confused but so long as they move properly eventually there is no problem.

One word of warning for the winter - beware leaving them folded overnight when there is a hard frost or snow. The motors are not very strong and don't like trying to push ice out of the way. The gap under the mirror at the hinge is a favourite place for ice to gather.

I have never and would never try operating these in icy conditions as it would be asking for trouble!

I've noticed the same delay on the mirrors to... Previous V70 had folding mirrors too.. and set to automatically close \ open with locking \ unlocking and never had any issues with delays or cold weather... Has anyone had a motor failure due to the cold weather?

The mirrors on my Pathfinder wouldn't fold back out at about -6° this winter.
I had told my wife not to fold them because of ice, but she did anyway out of habit.
So in the morning when it refused to move, I pushed the mirror while she pressed the button and it opened. Didn't seem to damage the motor or blow a fuse, they still work normally afterwards.
