    Hi there

I'm new to Audi's and this forum, so Thanks in anticipation for any advice!

We are looking at buying an A6 Avant Sport 2.5 TDI Quattro for towing our 4 birth caravan which weighs approx 1460kg.

Although the sums potentially add up for a nice set up, Someone has intimated to us that the gearing may be too high on the car to deal with towing.

Can anyone offer any advice based on their own experiences of towing with this car?

We have been offered an A6 Avant 1.9 TDI as an alternative... would this be any better?

    Any help greatly appreciated.

    Regards,

    Anthea

Hi i have a 1.9tdi and tow a coachman mirage 20ft about 1200k i think and it tows well, i had a remap done on the car and obviously it tows better now, i think the weight limit for the 1.9 is 1650-1700 max so that doesnt leave you much to play with but i would have thought the 2.5 would be the better bet, more power torque etc hope that helps

The 1.9 would pull off more quickly. To be honest, you shouldn't have a problem with either.

I tow a boat 1500kgs with a A6 2.5tdi Quattro, ive also towed the same boat with a 1.9 A4. The differance is huge, on hills with the A4 I was dropping gears to beat the band, the only problem with the A6 is remembering that the trailer is attached! Also remember that tha A6 is a heavy lump of a Car and my own personal view is that they are underpowered as a 1.9.

I'd agree in saying that the 1.9 Tdi is underpowered for serious towing, unless like diddly you have the ECU remapped.
I own a Allroad 2.5 Tdi Tip and tow a horse box which weighs approx 1400kgs with horse onboard and it copes extremely well. The auto box is particularly suited for towing.

Make shure that the new car has cruise control or if it does not, arrange to have it fitted soon. The 2.5 quattro 6 speed manual in the a6 is a perfect combination for a good all round tow car, you will forget that you tow a heavy caravan !I do regulary tow with my a4 quattro and to be onest, a 2 tonne loadis nothing for these cars/egines !

That's about the going rate, as long as it in good condition and has FSH.
