What about a carrying your bike on the roof when you need to? I have an avant (which is better looking and more practical than the saloon in my opinion, but each to their own!) and have a basic halfords roof mounted cycle carrier (cost £15 but i already had roof bars) which i find is excellent.

Personally I think the avant looks better but that's each to their own. The Avant is far more practical for pretty much every situation. If you've got a relatively large box to collect from a shop or an awkward shape piece of luggage, you just can't get it into the boot of a saloon as the lip just gets in the way. I've had both the avant and saloon so I speak from experience. With regards to the 0-60 time, depending on engine of course, you'll never be able to notice the difference in my opinion. It must be 0.2 seconds or something along those lines. Practicality wins out on a day to day basis

I think, it's far better to use a bike carrier for these cases. Audi has it's own solution:

Genuine Audi Foldable Tow Bar Cycle Carrier | eBay

But there are several other manufacturers on the market with different products.

IMHO, for this case, an Avant is only useful, if you can carry your bike(s) in the car, because if you carry it outside, than there will be no big differences between the Avant and the Saloon. For me a Salon is far more practical, as I prefer the separated internal area from the ambient temperature, and that's a thing, which you can't do in an Avant if you open the fifth door.

I think the avant v saloon is what ever you prefer the look of or your personal requirements.

Not sure what engine your looking at but on the 2.0 it's around .3 seconds and I just don't think you will notice that difference in performance.

I've only ever had one saloon - an Orion! One coupe - just as impractical, but faster. As others have said the Avant is the thinking driver's workhorse that can be fun and go fast if you pick the right one. And if you ever have to spend a night in your car you can stretch out too. I'm only surprised they didn't use Avants in The Transporter.
