I also noticed that my vent "white" icons and cup holder and coin tray icons did not light up. The vents had the leds but no wiring - simply remedied with a custom loom wired into dash illumination circuit. Purchased a newer Cup holder and coin tray off fleabay with the back illumination already present - with a couple more wires joined into dash illumination circuit.

Lit up like a Xmas tree now!
My vents light up ok but the cup holder and coin tray don't. Mine's a SE. I can't see how the bulb goes into them? Do the newer cupholder and coin tray have bulbs built in? I guess this is easier to do that the FWs!! Any clues as to how to do cupholder and coin tray?

    Cheers.

Both the coin holder and cup holder illumination works in the same way. At the back of the respective items there is a small plastic rectangular clip-on box containing 2x red LED's with a 2pin (0.1" pitch) electrical connector. Connecting 12v to this gives the illumination to the LED module. This red LED light is then transferred to the front of the unit by means of a fibre-optic conductor - it's a strip of thin perspex. At the front of the unit, i.e. where the white icon is, there is another fibre-optic conductor that picks up the light and carries the light through 90degrees to the back of the icon - they must have spent millions developing this!

Is your unit compatible for illumination?
Check to see if there is the LED module on the back of the respective unit - if YES - wire it up and have a beer!

If not, then I'm afraid it's off to the ******** or fleabay !

Can't I add the LED module?
The LED module does actually detach, but it has no part number. I have scanned the Official Audi parts database (EKTA7) and there is no mention of it specifically for these items - you would also require the fibre-optic conductor.

Now I did take an LED module and a fibre-optic strip from a fleabay donar coin holder and managed to install it into my lightless unit - HOWEVER, the front icon was very dim on my original tray unit - it transpires that my lightless unit did not have the icon illumination fibreoptic strip directly behind it - just air. This was again confirmed by removing the donar coin tray and installing into my own housing. It now illuminates brilliantly.

On the part list "cup holder" page, there is an item named "fibre-optic conductor", part no. 8E0 857 355, priced at £6.15+VAT. My parts ******* knew nothing about these items and where they are used?? If this is the LED module and fibre-optic strip it may work although not 100% since the back of the icon lacks an illumination strip which can't be added to the already glued fronts of the respective units.

If you are looking to buy a donar/replacement unit off fleabay ask the seller the question - "Does the coin/cup-holder have a small led module at the back of the unit with a 2-pin electrical connector?"

Also beware that other Audi models use different coin holders and I beleive cup holders, make sure you buy a specific A4 unit. (These items are also RHD, hence the 8E2 part number prefix.)
    Audi part numbers:
    Cup holder: 8E2 862 534 J5 PR @ £22.39+VAT
    Coin Holder: 8E2 941 561 C5 PR @ £26.05+VAT

Fleabay A4 cup holders are rare, let alone illuminated - I did actually give into the ******** and buy from them after looking for 3 months - I had a weak moment!

Your posts should be in the "How to" section! Really well explained. I'll have to check to see if my cupholder and coin tray have the LED module. How do you suggest I remove these? I found this on the web:

    http://www.audiworld.com/tech/int60.shtml

Apparantly radio removal tools can be used to pull out cupholder and coin tray according to the above website. Is this the best way or is there a simpler way to remove them?

    Cheers,

    Tony

    Yep - that's about it.

I have the AUDI Satellite Nav-Plus unit (RNS-E) and had to pull this out a couple of inches to enable the cup holder and coin tray to be extracted - they foul on the top of the radio on extracation.
I have the Audi Radio removal keys so this was not a problem.
I used a small flat blade screwdriver to release the sprung plastic lugs retaining the relevant cup and coin units in place.

Note that the web link supplied is for a LHD vehicle - so take a closer look to locate the RHD modules sprung lugs - mirror image!!

Anybody know the part numbers of the door courtesy lights while we're on the subject? Might as well attempt the whole lot if things have got to be taken apart! Assuming of course that these lights can be retro-fitted!

    Cheers.

Now that we have a lighting guru here: Is there a specific part number for the arm rest light connector and does the arm rest LED use 12V or a regulated voltage?

I figure I can steal the power to the arm rest light from the cigarette lighter illumination in the center console, but just wanted to make sure it's indeed 12V.

There is a part listed as: "Wiring Harness with led for illumination of storage compartment in centre armrest"
    Audi part no. 8E0 971 196
    Estimated price £18.50+VAT

The wiring diagrams indicate the following items are on a common dashboard illumination feed:

    • L50 - Rear Centre Ashtray
    • L67 - Left Panel Vent
    • L68 - Centre Panel Vent
    • L69 - Pight Panel Vent
    • L120 - Storage Compartment
    • L121 - Cup Holder
    • L122 - Coin Holder

As per other dash illum connections, these illuminations use LED's and not bulbs, so ensure correct polarity - colour coding used is 0v=brown / 12v(variable)=grey/blue. You should not damage the led's if connected incorrectly at 12v - you just will not have any illumination!!

The Front Cigarette Lighter uses the same feed on Pin1=grey/brown & Pin 3=brown.

Thanks alot! In this case I think I might make the connection at the comfort equipment module and wire the vents and cup holder to light up as well. I'm also installing footwell lights so I might as well wire them up properly.

Rang the local ******* with the above part numbers. They said that the cupholder and coin tray have never been lit up! i.e. you can't buy them with lights. They also said that the vents LOOK as though they light up but in fact they dont!! Not sure what planet they're from!
