Right, so just got back from test driving a 56 reg B6, which I opted not to purchase for a few reasons, most of which I'll not bore you with here.

But one was the cruise control, which I couldn't get to work. I pointed this out to the dealer (who had happily let me and the wife test drive by ourselves) and he said that VW cruise control only works above 56 mph.

To which my instinctive reaction was to call bull.

Now, we were in a pretty urban area in the middle of Sheffield, but none the less I valiantly took it out again, and pulled some "back-to-the-future" style driving, getting her up to 60 on a trading estate, but still no cruise control light, and, I'm 99% sure, no cruise control (hard to be 100% when you have about 2 seconds at that speed before having to hit the breaks to avoid stacking the car into floors-2-go).

Bringing it back in again, the dealer told me he'd get somebody to take a look at it.

So, was there anything in his original 56mph claim?

Like I say, it's not something I've ever heard of and would be really annoying for those 50mph average spped checks that are springing up all over our motorway roadworks.

Presuming he was talking crap, then I'm glad to have walked away from a dela with somebody who'd come up with such outrageous nonsense!

You were right to call bull - I have definitely used my cruise control at 50mph (in fact, I did so on the way home from the dealer on the day I picked her up), and I have accidentally knocked it into the 'on' position whilst pootling around town - the dash light was the giveaway.

Probably just a blown fuse, but as you weren't getting the right feeling from the car, you were right to walk away.

    Lang may yer lum reek!

I'm pretty sure VAG cruise control is set to work above 30KPH (18.64MPH). They even advertise it as a feature to use it in 30MPH zones to help prevent accidental speeding.

Either the salesman is bullshitting you to try to hide the fact the CC is not working (a common fault - probably just dirty contacts on the switch) or he genuinely doesn't know the specs of the product he is selling (again not uncommon).

    Cheers guys, thought as much.

Happy to have walked away, having found checked this - A bit of a pointless piece of bull from the salesman really.

I'm a little tickled by the idea of how his heart must have sunk when I said "I'll take it back out, I reckon I can hit 60 on that straight bit of trading estate"... Not to mention the thought of him watching us ragging it back and forwards past his dealership trying desperately to hit 56. He must have been half expecting us to disappear in a sudden flash, leaving only a burning pair of tyre marks, I know I was!

Yes, Phil_P is right, cruise works from 19mph upwards.

A1Dan75, are you sure the cruise was turned on first. You have to activate it before the cruise works in the first place. Sorry if this sounds a stupid question, but it's a possibility.

As in pulled into the "nearer to the driver" position? Yes, but no green light.

Yes. Strangely I can't remember without trying mine now, but I think the light only comes on once the cruise is set (might be wrong), even with the cruise stalk in the correct position. A couple of other simple things that stop cruise working are firstly the brake light switch is mis-adjusted or faulty, and the same with the clutch switch, as the car may think that either the brakes are on or the clutch is pushed in, as either of these will cancel the cruise.

Earlier VW's were different, as the cruise light was on all the time the cruise was left in the 'on' position, whether is was actually being used or not.
