    Hiya,

Odd one this but i get a hum whenever i turn right (even if only slight). I've checked both front wheels for play in the bearings, but they are both solid with no play at all.

The wheels are not oversize at all - std 16"

The tyres are decent enough - avon ZV5.

The noise sounds almost like something rubbing the tyre (like a bit of loose splash guard)

Does anyone have any ideas before i go drive the thing off a cliff

P.S - i've also checked the powersteering fluid, and that's in order too....

Sounds like a wheel bearing unless you can see something rubbing.

Check your under tray hasn't partly dislodged itself & is catching the tyres when the car is in motion, it may look secure at a standstill but have a good poke about to make sure all is fastened tight.

sounds like the belt tensioner / clutch pulley ? Mine started the same and i'm still trying to find a garage that will give me a definitive answer !

Thanks chaps... i took the wheels off yesterday evening, but i couldn't find anything obvious... nothing obviously rubbing etc.

I've garaged it this morning so i'll come back with the findings. Mine is an A4 by the way.

johnno1 - that's an interesting one, were your symptoms exactly the same as mine? Can you feel vibration through the steeringwheel & pedals etc with that (i can) How did you diagnose it??

hi , i'm not sure my prob the same as yours but when i 1st noticed it i d assumed it was some loose trim from the grill/wheel arch but it gradually got worse - on closer inspection i could see the main drive belt 'jumping' , im still trying to work out if its the alternator clutch or the belt tensioner , any help anyone else ? Thanks all .

Johno. You will probably find it's the alternator free wheel. Take the belt off and spin the alternator using the wheel. You should feel the armature in the alternator turning in one direction but it should feel free and easy in reverse. Basically if one direction feels stiffer than the other you are ok, if it feels the same in either direction, it's not ok.

If the noise disappears when you straighten up.........it's probably a front wheel bearing. Play is not a factor in modern front wheel bearings until it is about to fall apart!! By then then the noise will be blood-curdlingly scary.Mac
I came in to this world with nothing and I've still got most of it left.
