    Hi,

    I've just bought a Nov 02 Passat, 1.9 SE TDI 100BHP.

    How can I tell if I have got a PD engine or not? In fact, can someone tell me what exactly is a PD engine.

    Reason I'm asking is because I want to get some oil from opieoils (which I got from reading posts here) and they have asked if my engine is PD and I cannot tell even though I've read all the manuals.

    Thanks

    It will be a PD engine, visible differences are;

    PD Engine;
    1, No injection pump

    Non PD Engine;
    1, Injection pump

    Main differece is the PD uses unit injectors, one for each cylinder instead of a central pump and pipework. The unit injectors are driven ny a separate set of cam lobes via rockers. It is these extra lobes and rockers that are very suceptable to accelerated wear if the incorrect i.e. NON PD spec oil is used.

    Also as a general rule of thumb for turbo charged engines;

    Non PD engines are;
    90 bhp
    110 bhp

    PD are;

    100 bhp
    115 bhp
    130 bhp
    150 bhp

    Hope this helps

    Thanks a lot for that. Much appreciated. I will be doing a search later on to get more information about when oil changes, etc need to be done but if you know of any links that explain this and how, I'd really appreciate it.

    Will also be visiting Amazon to order a Haynes Manual for the passat unless you guys say there's something better to get.

    Ta.

    Warning over oil. I have just been onto Castrol tech dept today. My vehicle runs on Longlife 2 VW 503 / VW 506 spec. Castrol no longer make this oil. There is no replacement by them. Castrol now produce Longlife 3 VW 504 / VW 507 spec. This is NOT backward compatible. Castrol tech advise that it does not contain the additives that Longlife 2 engines need for the camshaft as they are not hardened. On new VW engines the camshafts are hardened and therefore there is no need for the additive on those engines. Castrol tech state they have no idea what VW are doing about this as they no longer produce the oil we need. I rung my VW main dealer and they knew nothing about this issue. They state they have been putting Longlife 3 into Longlife 2 spec engines becaused neither VW nor Castrol have told them otherwise and suggest if the engine is damaged it will be Castrols responsibilty and problem, not theres as they are only following instructions from VW..... a bit worrying that the main dealer is using the wrong spec oil and you cant get the right oil from them. I am now stuck.

    Post a picture of it and I'll soon tell you.

    From what you say initially, it is a PD100 TDI.

    I'd say someone you've been talking to doesn't know what THEY'RE talking about. For a start ALL camshafts are hardened, otherwise they wouldn't last very long (especially on a p.d engine). I run my p.d 130 sport on longlife (been like that since day 1), and the cars monitoring system tells me to change it around 18000 miles. The car has 66000 miles on it and the last 2 oil changes were done with castrol SLX III Edge, i read the bumf that came with the oil when i changed it and it said 'it was the replacement for SLX II' and had the correct VW numbers attached. So my car has done more than 20000 miles on SLX III oil and is none the worse for it (i've checked my camshaft lobes last service).
    My advice is not to worry and just use the new stuff...just make sure its got VW P.D approved on the sticker as other makes of car have their own SLX III (Edge) variants.

    P.S : My car has been remapped to 170bhp and gets 'driven' (best way to treat these p.d engines on Longlife IMHO)

    kimsue, you are right, I too have read this on Castrols website and data sheets, it specifically prohibits using 507 in PD engines and says use EDGE Turbodiesel 5w40 which is 506.

    Here is the URL link to the castrol website...for the correct oil to be used in P.D engines on longlife/fixed interval servicing

    http://www.castrol.com/castrol/produ...tentId=7008962

    And here is the link to the datasheet for it
    http://129.35.64.91/bpglis/lubtds.ns...E?OpenDocument

    Here is a link for P.D engines on fixed intervals
    http://www.castrol.com/castrol/produ...tentId=7009125

    And the datasheet for it
    http://129.35.64.91/bpglis/lubtds.ns...4?OpenDocument

    To sum up..if you VW P.D engine is on longlife intervals use Castrol Edge 5w 30, if its on fixed intervals use Castrol Edge Turbo Diesel 5w 40.

    Its easy to see why people can get confused as the naming of the products is similar, and the longlife/fixed interval servicing just adds to the confusion. The new number designation VW 504 00/507 00 represents the testing standards VW put the oil through...these supersede the old 506 numbers.

    hope this clarify's some things..and if it does'nt, then here is the FAQ on SLXII replacement (second question down)

    P.S: Also IMHO its best to stick with the setup the car was originally was sold with, i.e if its longlife..stick with longlife etc.
