you can indeed go bigger, much bigger. the car came with 14" wheels as standard cos they kept the costs down when new. A 17" wheel with a relatively low profile tyre should squeeze under there no problem at all, maybe even an 18", or with a little arch work (rolling, pulling etc) you could go even bigger.

**PlEaSe!!!** be very careful about the choice of wheel you pick for the car. many wheels on VW cars will make it look really tacky, and a lot will look plain wrong without some sort of lowering. i would recommend something 16 or 17 inch, deep dished, or something flat faced, as this will compliment the shape of your car well, and is classic VW. also cabrio mk3's look amazing with a wider 'staggered' fit at the back, which will require the arches being pulled out to accomodate the extra width. well worth it for a spot on stance though.

I think it is also pretty cool to add the wheels from connected companies in place of your originals. Bentley, Audi, Lamborghini and Maybach wheels have all been seen on the VAG scene bolted to various cars, as well as AMG Mercedes wheels, and this can give a really fresh feeling to the car. just be wary that anything from the above mentioned cars will be a 5 stud fitment, and from memory yours is a 4(?). also check the offsets and PCD (your wheels supplier can verify the fitments for you) to make sure that they will go on your car with no complications.

    hope this helps!
