My 2002 1.9 TDI Avant has developed an interesting aircon problem.

Regardless of the temperature set or whether ECON is on or off, the flaps are constantly moving in a seemingly random manner. Most noticeable when trying to demist the screen because the air gets directed that way, then into the cabin, then back again - all very random.

In terms of reaching the required temp, it does get there in the end but i notice the direction and temp of the air changing throughout any journey. Can't be right?

Any thoughts? Does the control unit sound like the problem? If so, how much are these?

Usually, but this problem persists with it on auto or not. In fact the flaps keep whirring away even after turning the engine off.

    OK

Recently serviced and a couple of codes were reported that identify the problem:-

00710 Defroster flap motor (V107) 41-10 blocked or no voltage - intermittent

00716 Air recirc flap motor (V113) 41-10 blocked or no voltage - intermittent

I suspect (from talking to others) that the fix for this falls into the MASSIVE COST category (dash out etc. to fix flaps / motors)

So, I'll put up with it I guess...

    Any other ideas welcome.

dude the same codes appeared when i took my car to a SEAT dealership to have it checked. (i service it myself and then go to SEAT shop and have it checked with the VAG tool for only 12 euro. Audi shops suck)

if it aint broke dont fix it

intermittent means dont bother, unless it causes serious discomfort

I too would welcome any comments/advice, since I am having the same problem and getting the same fault code. How big a job is it to access the unit and check the flaps?

    Thanks,
    Ade

Have been putting up with the problem for some time until the screen demist stopped altogether this winter - dangerous.

Followed another related thread and removed the glove box. Gave all the flap linkages a prod and this cured it - for a while.

All functions seem fine now apart from demist. Will remove glove box again this afternoon and repeat. Seems like a design weakness on the complex linkages between motors and flaps.

    Cheers

I'm having repeated problems with the same two control motors. I think the fault code throws up a problem with the potentiometer in the motor unit. I have managed to fix the problem by removing the motors units and opening them up and spraying the pot with IPA. I did have to reset the flaps motors using vagcom before they would work properly. I don't know how long it will last before they fail again.

I did exactly the same thing as you...Peace again! BUT only lasted for a couple of weeks, and has started the same erratic behavior in I think 3 of the motors.
i agree, i think it is the potentiometers that are causing the fault, which would be fine, if we could purchase and replace just that part and not the whole motor assembly at approx £70 a pop!!
The pot is probably a couple of £s worth only. Has anyone been able to get hold of this potentiometer separately??

Have you tried to clean the potentiometer - assuming you can get it out.

What happens with them (note I have never done it in an audi but in general electronics - radio etc) is a layer of dirt builds up on them.

I have taken many apart - very very carfully as the arms are very fragile - and then cleaned the carbon track down with methelayted spirits or my favourite - an Ink erasor (same as a pencil one but much courser). again be careful with the arms. note you could replace them yourself - just get a multimeter to measure the total resistance and then go to your local maplins and get one of the same resistence with a 1% tolerance. Again I stress I have never done this in an audi but it should work - there is nothing special about a potentiometer.

This should fix any problems with them.

    Regards,

    Walter.
