Passat Remote Not Working

My 1998 Passats remote key fob has stopped working.I changed the battery and in doing so I think I damaged the small circuit board.I've been looking on ebay at new fobs but can not find one that looks like mine.Can any fob be programmmed to my vehicle or do I need one with the same numbers that are on mine.Maybee my only option is to let the dealership sort it out.Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I bought a key fob from ebay, the part code needs to be identical. it should then match in by matching it with the car. simple procedure.

There are 2 parts to the key, the remote and then the font half is matched to the immobilser. So you need to that half with the new remote or you need a blank cut an the key matched to the system using VAG-com. (diagnostic software)

Hi Rob Thank you for the reply.Sorry to sound so dim but are you saying that if I got hold of a new fob and inserted this onto my origonal front half it would unlock the car? The front half is Ok as I can unlock the car manually and start it OK.Thanks.Dave

Yes, the remote and key are joined together, but technically they are 2 different, parts. The key part has a transponder for the immobiliser and the remote part is for the central locking.

I just tested this on mine and the car works without the remote half anywhere near the car.

Tou will need to match the remote part, this can be done manually as follows.. look at this thread.
