I have a panoramic sunroof. It failed to close a couple of times and was "fixed" under warranty.
now out of warranty it fails to open. It starts to tilt then sticks. The roof mechanism was cleaned and greased with "special Audi sunroof grease" last autumn. Is this a common problem or is my roof a bad 'un? To be honest, one should not expect annual garage bills to sort out a sunroof.

The "fix" was always just a clean and a re grease which seemed strange to have to do annually to keep it working . Even after that, although smooth, it seemed to be very tight and struggled to open or close but the dealer always maintained there was nothing wrong other than lube needed. This is why I ask if this is a general problem or just my roof that might be a poor factory insallation

Sounds more serious than a clean and grease. Could be the motor needs an adaptation or you might have a broken sunroof cassette. If it's the cassette it's going to be at least a £1000 for the part then the roof lining and all the pillar trims removed so it might end up at £1500 plus vat by the time it's fixed.

Every time I read a post on a forum about the Panoramic Sunroof, I count my blessings that I don't have one. They seem to be an expensive nightmare. To the original point raised I would think that given it was repaired under warranty, so there is evidence there were problems with it previously, and providing you have continued to use an Audi dealer for servicing then there should be a good case for some goodwill on the part of Audi and the dealer. They certainly cannot claim that an expensive option is a serviceable part with a limited life expectancy. One thing that I know has surprised others on this forum is that the sunroof has its own service regime costing about £160 a time (not sure if it is annual or bi-annual). If you have not adhered to that then it may be the cause of the problem

Well I've had my car for 2.5 years and had no mention of a sunroof service, but due a service in the next few weeks so see if they mention it then.
The mechanism of my panoramic sunroof so far has appeared to always work fine, but I did have the sunroof switch replaced under warranty.

    Thanks for the reply.
i have booked it in today and did remind them that the sunroof has given problems from new and that, when under warranty, they logged this problem in case there were any issues in the future. Let's see if they honour that. Booked in mid April. Will let you know how it goes
I did clean and lube the rails last Autumn with Audis grease -about £35 for a toothpaste tube size!! I think it is something more than a greasing issue and always has been

I can only comment based on the open sky glass roof we had in an A2.

Problems early on with a twisted 'frame' (cassette?) meant that they replaced that under warranty when the car was maybe 2 years old.
Then at 7 years (if I recall) old the sunroof started leaking on one corner... once again the frame was suspect and that cost us a 4 figure sum. It was over £1000 but I can't remember exactly how much and we got some good will from our local dealership as we'd bought a number of cars from them and always went there for servicing.

I am in the "never again" camp when it comes to the big glass sliding roofs... If it's a company car you're gonna ditch after 3 years then fine, let it be someone else's problem - if its your own car and you plan to keep it for 4 or 5 + years then it's a gamble IMO.

Sounds like Audi cannot fit sunroofs. For such a "high quality" brand it is not good to think a £1500 accessory will only last 3 or 4 years.
we have four different Audis and to be honest I am rapidly losing faith in the company. I have never had problems with sunroofs on other makes of car. I suppose,if they cannot get a sunroof to be reliable, what chance do they have of achieving emission standards
