This EGR issue is close to moving me from fleet purchase of VW group cars over 30 years. I have always run VAG group. My wife's seat 40k 4year 1.6tdi light has come on - egr code reset and cleaner has done the trick for now. Just test drove a similar age same engine skoda from a dealer - fault light came on during test drive and new egr valve needed! One hundred percent of cars in sample of two cars does not bode well?!
My 2011 Golf Match 1.6 TDI with 34k miles recently went in to the local VW dealership for a MOT, major service and a diagnostic because an orange coil lamp would occasionally appear on the dashboard which could be removed by taking out and replacing the ignition key and the car would run fine for days or sometimes even weeks. Before lunchtime I duly received a phone call to advise that the car had passed the MOT and the service had been completed (at a total cost of £319) but the diagnostics had identified an emissions problem and I would need a new ERG valve at a further cost of approximately £1,100.
As the VW emissions scandal had just hit the fan I questioned how the car had actually passed the MOT with an emissions fault. Furthermore, and rather worryingly how do I need an EGR valve with such low mileage on a vehicle that's been driven appropriate to a diesel engine and only ever used Shell V Power diesel. The garage agreed the mileage was low for an EGR replacement and secured a 50% reduction from VW but I now have zero faith in the long term reliability of this engine and wonder if the EGR valve is designed to cope with the declared emissions which we now know to be false rather than the actual emissions which could be considerably higher.
When reading the various forums it appears the EGR valve is a problem with VW 1.6 TDI engines and if anyone has purchased a VW with an expectancy of many many trouble free years I'm not sure you'll get the result you had hoped for.
Tony, if you have full dealer service history, given your low mileage you should ask for a higher goodwill contribution. Others including myself (2 months over the 3yr warranty, 40k miles) have had this repair with 100% goodwill.
I've spoken to a senior manager within VW UK Customer Services who is "going to see what he can do" in terms of reducing my contribution but in addition to the cost I have expressed my concerns about the long term reliability of the engine as I had hoped to keep this vehicle for many more years. My point was if an EGR system typically fails within 30k to 40k miles it follows that I could see several EGR replacements over the lifetime of the vehicle. He went on to explain that there should be no problems in the future because the new EGR valve will be an upgraded unit with a 2 year manufacturers warranty and they've been fitting upgraded units since late 2011.Quote:

Some very interesting points here made about these EGR failures and especially that the upgraded ones were fitted from 2011 and that maybe the original versions had issues realted to actual emissions. I hope someone with more knowledge can enlighten us as to whether this is a feasible explanation.
I had eml and coil light came on my 58 Audi A3 2.0tdi. RAC reported P0403 and said egr valve seems to be blocked up as car had power loss. Deleted the codes coil light gone but eml was still there and car was driving fine since then. Took it to Audi garage and been quoted £1430 for both egr valve and intake manifold replacement. Of course didn't go ahead with repairs but wondering if it is ok to drive car like this or shall I change egr valve only that I found on eurocarparts £129 to my local garage to see if eml will go away. Any ideas?
