    FYI
My Golf 1.6 Diesel Match, registered Nov 2010 has just been off the road for a week due to failed a Exhaust gas Recirculation valve.
It manifested with a flashing glow plug light, and a "WORKSHOP" legend in the binnacle display. The engine soon became very lumpy and unresponsive, and the car was dropped off at my nearest VW dealership.
They tried to sell me some tyres, and then diagnosed the fault as being due to the EFR valve, which took them a few days to find a replacement for.
Due to high mileage, (70,000 relaxed motorway miles) the car is out of warranty, and I was initially quoted a heart stopping £990 + VAT to fix it. After some "discussion", VW agreed to pay for the part and 70% of the labour, leaving me with a bill of around £160.
Anyway, I'm back on the road, (after another trip to the workshop for them to secure the undertray...) and the new part is guaranteed for 2 years. So hopefully I'll get a couple more years of trouble free use out of the car.

Interesting read - my late 2009 1.6 tdi bluemotion has just gone into the dealers after some weird noises came from under the bonnet (sounds like the exhaust is blowing badly from the manifold). VW mechanic at first glance said he suspected the EGR valve, but I had no warning lights whatsoever and the car drove 'ok', if not a bit down on power.

Thankfully we'd just taken an extended warranty, so I'm hoping whatever the problem is will be covered by the warranty anyway.

I have just had exactly the same problem with my 2009 mk6 golf 1.6 TDI. The warranty ran out end of December and annoyingly I was considering extending it but forgot and never got the letter from VW... The fault started Saturday with the Glow light flashing and the CAT light solid. Breakdown mechanic diagnosed faulty O2 sensor on the exhaust but a local garage has subsequently diagnosed the fault being the EGR valve. I'm taking it to my local VW dealer in the hope VW will pay most of the cost, given this is not a typical wear & tear part. Apparently this is a known fault?

Add mine to the list of EGR failures

December 2009 (59) 1.6TDI SE (105bhp) - 62k miles - 4 months out of warranty , so far VW coughing up 100% of parts cost and 50% of labour, leaving me £288 to pay (still negotiating !)

''If only everything in life was as reliable as a Volkswagen !''

    Edit - 22/4/13

EGR valve replaced under goodwill, total cost to me £58 after dealer and vw customer services chipped in to the repair bill

following day the pdf pressure sensor failed, so that cost me £29 after goodwill

All sorted but still a little worrying they reliability of an engine thats used eveyday for decent length commutes with little to no stress.

I got the history print for mine from mate that works in Audi dealer.

Had EGR under warranty at 2 years old odd.

    1.6 tdi as well.

Seems a matter of when rather than if with this engine

Got the same problem with my '10 plate Golf 1.6 Bluemotion, done 70k gentle miles mostly on motorways.
Now undriveable - at Ridgeway VW in Reading
Who did you negotiate with ? Ridgeway in Reading claim it's down to VW customer service. VW claim it's the dealers choice alone.
Neither will give me a courtesy car - so much for VW service promise.
I'm being quoted £388 plus £490 for a leaky water pump.

Why should I pay £878 for a car that's sold as "Reassuringly Expensive" - or was that something else ?

Surprised this is affecting cars with high motorway miles, last time I looked into it was only cars doing short journeys around town with issues.

As this seems to happen around 60-70k, I'm hoping it's already been done on mine as it's now on 105k.
