Hi All !
This is my first post.. be gentle! :-)
I ordered a new Golf mid-February as part of a scrappage scheme trade-in (against an R-reg Suzuki that was worth maybe £200!) and am getting quite excited!
Spec:
Golf S 5 door
1.4 TSI 122PS Petrol engine
Passion Red
Factory fitted 15" Alloys
RCD310 with MDI (centre arm rest)
Electric Windows throughout
Leather trim wheel (not MF...)
Highline computer
I did price up the SE but I got another £1250 off (totalling £3250) by going with the S trim, and even with the factory options that I actually wanted it worked out cheaper with the S than the SE and only getting £2k discount.
Most of my driving is city-based so would never use cruise control. I kind of wish I'd put the luxury pack on it but meh. And at a later stage I might invest in some slightly larger alloys, but don't know what this would do to the ride. :-)
Just over 4 weeks after ordering I got a call from the dealer to say the car was built and at checkpoint 7, which meant it was being tested/checked and gone over with a fine tooth comb, and was optimistically suggesting late April for collection!!! :biglaugh:
Anyone got a clue as to whether this sounds about right? I've googled but can't really find any descriptions of the different 'checkpoints' or manufacturing stages!
Many thanks!!

After the car is built it usuall takes 2 or 3 weeks to get it into the country and at the dealers, but I think it also varies on how big your dealers is - smaller ones having fewer deliveries/transporters.
Mine took 3 weeks from the end of the build week if that helps, then they PDI`d it immediately, your dealer may want a bit more time for PDI if they have a lot of orders coming in.
Enjoy your car when you get it, and remember, some people had to wait wayyyyyy longer, My GTD was just 1 day short of 4 months from order to delivery !! :approve:

Didn't know the 'S' came with alloy wheels as standard - not according to my brochure, anyway (dated April 2009).
Personally I would have gone for the luxury pack as this gives that invaluable ability to fold in the door mirrors snug against the windows - especiall good for city driving and parking etc.

Congratulations - you're dealer obviously had a car that wass spec changeable in the system for the speed of this order. Scrappage means they have to deliver within 14 weeks so lots of dealers will have pre-ordered the tsi engined cars on account of the normal long delivery times of 5-6 months.
normally its 2-3 weeks for delivery after leaving Wolfsburg, but there havs been a slight backlog because of the winter weather and the number of sailins that were missed. That should have cleared by now. The new reg plate has meant some dealers are struggling for space for cars at present, but i'd be hopeful of a mid April delivery.

It appears so HHGTTG, 15" Wellingtons (http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/#/new/golf-vi/configure/498/wheels) as an option.
Congratulations bigmac I hope you enjoy it. ;)

That's a pretty quick build time Bigmac! I also ordered mine about 16th Feb and am told delivery about end of April with a build set for next week. I ordered the luxury pack after all the advise on the forums :) Unfortunately it was too late to order the 15" Wellingtons -which really set off the car :( Hopefully they'll be ppl trading up in the next year or so ..so I can get a good deal on it! Are you making use of the 7 day free insurance pkg?

Cheers all :)
I only found these forums yesterday evening after searching for something on Google, had wished I had put the Luxury pack on but never mind I'm still going to love it all the same!
Marcus, I'm not taking up any insurance with VW. I've got an exceptionally good policy on a 2003 Polo Twist 1.2 at the moment with Elephant. They've been outstanding this past two months (I've had two accidents, one small prang which was my fault due to ice and one larger smash which was not my fault).
The polo is going to my parents rather than being sold, so I'm going to see if Elephant will give me a discount on the same policy with the Golf, if my parents take out a policy on the Polo with them.
Thanks to Elephant I'm currently driving a 58-plate Golf Estate Mk5 2.0TDI SE with all the trimmings as courtesy car while my Polo is repaired, just to wet my whistle!! That also has the Luxury pack I think which made me look it up on here!
The 15" alloys are nice but wondering if it might look a bit small with all that black rubber. I think I would have preferred the 17" Porto alloys but they don't offer it on the S. I'm also unsure what that would do to the ride and whether it would put the speedo out. (I'm a novice!)

Thats not really the point. VW offer a weeks free insurance on new cars. Once you ring them when you know the delivery date and the dealer number they will fax the details over to the dealer so they know it will be insured so they can tax the car before you pick it up. It saves you getting a cover note from your insurer then going back to the dealer.
I know the VW insurance is a joke as they quoted me £550. I only pay £320 with Esure. ;)

Oooh, I automatically assumed it was a free week if you take up a policy! So they will just provide a 7-day policy for free if I ask?
What's the catch? :D Haha

There is no catch really, except they may pester you a while after to carry on with their insurance.
I've only used it once, when the dealer somehow couldn't find the cover note that had been sent 5 days previously, in fact they claimed they never received it,although a few hours later it managed to appear when they delivered the car to me.

Hi Netherfield, the scenario you've described could have left you in Limbo if you put in a claim whilst your car was covered by 2 separate policies.

Sorry meant the 7day insurance as its useful for the reasons listed. What kind of deal did you get for the car; are you picking it up locally? I ended up using a broker as they were giving the best deals really..even on the scrappage.
Does the S trim come with the same body fittings as the SE interms of the lighting and the like? The VW brochure talks about "cherry red" rear light clusters but I thought this was standard on all models?

Hi Jerryf,
There is a possibility the dealer used the VW insurance to get the licence and then cancelled the cover,he said they used the system a lot to get licences.
If the scenario you suggested had arisen, I suppose I could have said that since I had not actually Paid any money for the cover it was not valid as such.
And my own insurance was already paid for, because it was an extension to the old car.

Yes it's at a local dealer, I knew there would be £2k off but there was an extra £1250 off the S trim from list price. So I was able to get just the flat £2k off an SE, or £3250 off an S.
I wasn't particularly in the market for a new car, it just sort of happened. They didn't try any sales tactics, but £3250 off a new Golf, when part exchanging with a car that was not going to ever pass another MOT.... just seemed quite reasonable.
It also means I can pass on my current Polo to my parents who just happen to be needing a much more economical and cheap-to-run car due to a chance in circumstances (the car I used to part-ex was theirs...)
Re. the fittings, as far as I can tell it doesn't have the chrome lines on the front grille (just gloss black), the seats don't let you change lumbar support, and I don't think it has the sliding cover on the storage compartment around the handbrake (although this might be more to do with the arm rest?)
I've no idea about the lights, I thought they were all the same? :)

There appears to be a bit of confusion here with all these discounts.
Did you buy it with the crapage scheme or not? ;)

bigmac, that sounds like a good deal:) I got about the same and car came in about 14.5k. I was rather peeved as the same car when I first when to look at it in Oct 2009 was almost ~1k cheaper! Its shocking with the VAT rise and VW rise that the car manufacturers are allowed to get away with..
Lets just hope the cars come in one piece -some of the horror stories you come across are right scary;)

Definitely... it allowed me to add on the aforementioned extras which I'm chuffed with :D
Cannot wait!! :)
Just having the extra cabin room.... mmmmmmm. :D

If the Suzuki is in your parents name then so too will be the golf. The insurance will have go be in their name too , with you as a named driver if you are collecting. You'll then gave to swap ownership of your polo and their golf around, so both cars will show and extra owner.

Ok then you used the scrappage scheme so how can "It also means I can pass on my current Polo to my parents?"
So which did you scrap?
Is this Polo another spare car? ;)

The 15"alloys will look just fine. Some pictures of these alloys appearing on the new 1.2 TSi models.

The 7 day free insurance is run by Aviva (formerly Norwich Union), my suggestion is take out the free 7 day insurance which the dealer arranges for you (you will not be asked to sign for anything or pass on any bank/payment details), you then get a call from the Aviva's sales team who will run through a quote with you, if it is too expensive simply say 'no thank you' - it's as simple as that.
Purchasing a brand new car through the scrappage deal using your parent's car is a smart way of doing it, a number of colleagues have done this by passing their existing car to their parents and using their old car as trade in and it has saved them thousands.

I steered clear of that offer, although it would have been convenient, because I thought there was a catch in it such that the company, in question, would pester me, subsequently to continue insuring with them.
A friend of mine had troubles two year's ago but he might have been on a different VW scheme, where a credit card number may have been given to get this instant insurance and they continued to take a year's cover from him when he did not want it - however I don't know the full facts.
Suffice it to say, I waited a few days to get my own cover note through from MoreThan and then presented that to the garage. It was only a few days (two I think) added on to a wait of 5 months and 1 week - hardly a problem

I used the 7 day insurance - rang up, asked for the 7 day cover, was asked if i wanted a annual quote which i declined and the cove note was emailed to the dealership.
No hassle, no credit cards - one 5 minute call and it was sorted.

You need the telephone number but also the dealership retailer identity number - your salesman should provide both of these.

i used the 7 day insurance too was no hassle and no follow up call at all, indeed when I originally went to get the car there was a problem so it took an extra week. A few days later I cancelled the vw insurance. They rearranged it for me again when the car was actually ready to be picked up.

Yes I used the VW insurance only so they could tax the car quicker.
When I changed my current insurance over to the new car I asked. Just supposing I can't drive the car away because of some technical fault which they need to fix am I still covered to drive my old car for a few days? They said no, one car ends and one car starts up. With previous insurance companies when I've had another car they continue the insurance on the old car for a couple of weeks to give me time to sell it or what ever.
They wanted to know the exact time I was picking it up? If I couldn't pick it up at that time and day I would have to notify them to have my old insurance reinstated. I asked VW the same question and they said no they don't extend the one week because of a late pickup period I have to notify them about the date change.
I would assume that VW would have supplied a courtesy car if I couldn't have taken it away. ;)

That's funny as MoreThan said that I have so many days grace should my new car be held up for some reason or other and I would not be able to pick the new car up on the arranged day - it has always been so.
