    Hi All !

This is my first post.. be gentle! :-)

I ordered a new Golf mid-February as part of a scrappage scheme trade-in (against an R-reg Suzuki that was worth maybe £200!) and am getting quite excited!

    Spec:
    Golf S 5 door
    1.4 TSI 122PS Petrol engine
    Passion Red
    Factory fitted 15" Alloys
RCD310 with MDI (centre arm rest)
    Electric Windows throughout
    Leather trim wheel (not MF...)
    Highline computer

I did price up the SE but I got another £1250 off (totalling £3250) by going with the S trim, and even with the factory options that I actually wanted it worked out cheaper with the S than the SE and only getting £2k discount.

Most of my driving is city-based so would never use cruise control. I kind of wish I'd put the luxury pack on it but meh. And at a later stage I might invest in some slightly larger alloys, but don't know what this would do to the ride. :-)

Just over 4 weeks after ordering I got a call from the dealer to say the car was built and at checkpoint 7, which meant it was being tested/checked and gone over with a fine tooth comb, and was optimistically suggesting late April for collection!!!

Anyone got a clue as to whether this sounds about right? I've googled but can't really find any descriptions of the different 'checkpoints' or manufacturing stages!

    Many thanks!!

After the car is built it usuall takes 2 or 3 weeks to get it into the country and at the dealers, but I think it also varies on how big your dealers is - smaller ones having fewer deliveries/transporters.
Mine took 3 weeks from the end of the build week if that helps, then they PDI`d it immediately, your dealer may want a bit more time for PDI if they have a lot of orders coming in.

Enjoy your car when you get it, and remember, some people had to wait wayyyyyy longer, My GTD was just 1 day short of 4 months from order to delivery !!

Didn't know the 'S' came with alloy wheels as standard - not according to my brochure, anyway (dated April 2009).
Personally I would have gone for the luxury pack as this gives that invaluable ability to fold in the door mirrors snug against the windows - especiall good for city driving and parking etc.

Congratulations - you're dealer obviously had a car that wass spec changeable in the system for the speed of this order. Scrappage means they have to deliver within 14 weeks so lots of dealers will have pre-ordered the tsi engined cars on account of the normal long delivery times of 5-6 months.

normally its 2-3 weeks for delivery after leaving Wolfsburg, but there havs been a slight backlog because of the winter weather and the number of sailins that were missed. That should have cleared by now. The new reg plate has meant some dealers are struggling for space for cars at present, but i'd be hopeful of a mid April delivery.

That's a pretty quick build time Bigmac! I also ordered mine about 16th Feb and am told delivery about end of April with a build set for next week. I ordered the luxury pack after all the advise on the forums Unfortunately it was too late to order the 15" Wellingtons -which really set off the car Hopefully they'll be ppl trading up in the next year or so ..so I can get a good deal on it! Are you making use of the 7 day free insurance pkg?

    Cheers all

I only found these forums yesterday evening after searching for something on Google, had wished I had put the Luxury pack on but never mind I'm still going to love it all the same!

Marcus, I'm not taking up any insurance with VW. I've got an exceptionally good policy on a 2003 Polo Twist 1.2 at the moment with Elephant. They've been outstanding this past two months (I've had two accidents, one small prang which was my fault due to ice and one larger smash which was not my fault).

The polo is going to my parents rather than being sold, so I'm going to see if Elephant will give me a discount on the same policy with the Golf, if my parents take out a policy on the Polo with them.

Thanks to Elephant I'm currently driving a 58-plate Golf Estate Mk5 2.0TDI SE with all the trimmings as courtesy car while my Polo is repaired, just to wet my whistle!! That also has the Luxury pack I think which made me look it up on here!

The 15" alloys are nice but wondering if it might look a bit small with all that black rubber. I think I would have preferred the 17" Porto alloys but they don't offer it on the S. I'm also unsure what that would do to the ride and whether it would put the speedo out. (I'm a novice!)

Thats not really the point. VW offer a weeks free insurance on new cars. Once you ring them when you know the delivery date and the dealer number they will fax the details over to the dealer so they know it will be insured so they can tax the car before you pick it up. It saves you getting a cover note from your insurer then going back to the dealer.

I know the VW insurance is a joke as they quoted me £550. I only pay £320 with Esure.

Oooh, I automatically assumed it was a free week if you take up a policy! So they will just provide a 7-day policy for free if I ask?

    What's the catch? Haha

There is no catch really, except they may pester you a while after to carry on with their insurance.

I've only used it once, when the dealer somehow couldn't find the cover note that had been sent 5 days previously, in fact they claimed they never received it,although a few hours later it managed to appear when they delivered the car to me.
