Hi - I'm having trouble with the exhaust emissions light coming on intermittently (not flashing) and also with the big fan coming on at top speed (the small fan remains off) and pulsing on and off intermittently. I took it to a small garage and had the computer diagnostics run on it, and only a fault with the fan system was highlighted - nothing on the exhaust system. The man told me to identify the problem fan and have it replaced. But presumably this wouldn't have anything to do with the exhaust light coming on?

I think you need it code rereading properly, there must be a reason for the emissions light coming on. Also, make sure you get a fault code print out, the fault code numbers are vital for us to help you.

I suspect it will be a faulty coolant temperature sender.

See my thread about a very similar problem. I've still not got to the bootom of it yet having changed one of the fan sensors.

There is a tech bulletin issued by VW relating to this problem. The emissions light comes on due to.....dirt ingress into the No.2 cooling fan (the small fan if I remember right). The cure is to replace the fan.

I'm not saying that is what's wrong with your car. Someone who works in the VW dealership would have to check your chassis number to see if the bulletin relates to your vehicle. Perhaps if you post your chassis number someone on the forum could check it for you.

Regards - Jim.
