Hi i have a 2000 1.8t quattro sport avant. The digital display has broken lines in the vertical and horizontal. Does this mean an entire replacement dash or can you get a replacement digital display.

Ahh the old cluster pox :-(

It's a new intrument panel complete from Audi - there are a few companies starting to offer a repair service, but not many in the UK - if any.....and they need the entire cluster to work on it....

Not a simple swap over either - as the dash contains the immo...so needs to be coded too....so I can see why there are a few repair companies looking at this very common problem....for about half the dealership cost...

Last time I asked it was about £450+vat for a swap out unit......

I've lost just one horizontal line...sometimes....but it falls just a single line below the bottom of the normal display, so when It's out I can only 'see' it on startup/or some warning symbols it cuts through.... seems to be heat/damp related, and sometimes a few cycles of the auto-check will pop the line back up...

That would be the one i was thinking of....but I've not found anyone who's had one done - here in the UK or the US...where I think I first saw mention...

Price is not too bad compared to dealer replacement I guess :approve:

Yeah my 00 V is doing it too. It comes and goes but at its worse I have had about 3 horizontal AND 3 vertical lines out so makes making out MPG etc fun if it clips a line I don't know if it is a 3 or an 8! Doh!

I've just got myself a 98 A4 although mine is a bit more severe (or not)
I noticed when I got the car that there were some lines in the display although its gone off altogether now, hopefully just a bulb????

Won't be a bulb as it is using LED technology so it is actually the led lines shutting down for whatever reason. There is no bulb as part of this bit of the display.

If it's all out - could be turned off - the reset switch on the stalk - brief click is on/off. Even when off you can still see the lines that will be out when on in most cases...sounds like what you had, so my money is on the on/off here....

Hi, I have a similar problem with the cetre display  but the whole display slowly fades away. It's perfect at start-up with no characters missing but slowly fades and becomes unreadable. Sounds like the same problem and as someone has already said could be heat related? Any comments

yep. same problem here on my '98. if the air inside the car is cold then the display it's almost perfect. but it slowly fades away as the temp rises inside the car.

Sorry I didn't reply. Yup, bang on. A quick click of the reset switch brought it all back on. Happy days :)

Now to get rid of the lines.........

I have heard a fix for this is to remove the console, seal it within a plastic bag and place it in the freezer over night and this can fix the LED display. Not sure how true this is. Anyone heard this or know about this??
