View Full Version : Ultra real world MPG?

I have an A6 Avant Ultra coming on Friday. Very interested to see what kind of MPG I can expect. I used to have the 3.0tdi quattro and was seeing over 40 if I remember rightly but this new one seems to promise over 60mpg? Is that really achievable or does it require driving like a buddhist monk?

Am thinking if you regularly saw 40 in a 3.0 quattro your a pretty careful driver anyway?
I get 50 in my 11 mile drive to work in a C6 quattro and 42-45 in colder months, just obeying the speed limits either in cruise or by feathering the (not so) loud pedal...in fact have always reached or exceeded the manufacturers claims...even in a prius! Exception being a 2012 insignia I had on hire.

I have had my Black Edition Ultra Manual saloon with s line sports suspension for 4 weeks now and done about 750 miles in and the long term computer is showing about 48 MPG. Its been over to Manchester on Good Friday and went to Cannock on Sunday. We only live about 45 minutes to a Hour away from Manchester so not much more than 50 miles and it got 50ish and Cannock was a 215 mile return journey and it averaged 61.3 MPG. Day to day it only does about a 15 Mile commute and probably averages 45 or so. Will be expecting more once the engine loosens up but even so return similar/Better MPG to what i was getting in my C6 Avant

A great point! I was scrolling down expecting to see somebody slaughter you for this!
I have a facelift A6 Advant SE. At the moment it is averaging 44mpg. Only covered 700 miles or so and haven't as yet taken it on a longer run than my 15 mile commute to work.

Having had mine a year I have never managed anything more than 46mpg although I am normally fully loaded with kids/luggage etc.

Yeah I know a bit sad to give a **** about mpg. I don't normally but I'm taking a couple months out to do a huge road trip through Europe. So far the route planned is 8k miles and still not finished yet.
When I did the same in the 3.0 Quattro I spent well over a grand in petrol. Was tempted to get the same engine but I've got a quick runabout now so I hope I don't miss the grunt.

Sooo many variables, auto? Manual? What terrain? And, most important, are you a feather foot? Or do you drive it like yer stole it? Realistically, in normal use you could average low to mid fifties. For a car that's the thick end of two tons that's not too shabby. Enjoy.

long term is showing 51.6 over 12000 miles
short term i have had 62 on a 200 mile trip leaving it at 75mph on cruise when traffic would allow
Find the car is more economical at 75 than 65. Manual car in BE spec

Ultra Black Edt in Manual... fill to fill using the Road Trip App is 42 MPG, DIS is saying 48 MPG. The car has 7200 on the clock of which I've done 1800 miles
My Golf GTD / DSG returned 38.5 MPG over nearly 4 years, compared to the DIS that said 48.5 MPG
I'm pleased with the improvement in MPG seeing that the car is a lot more heavier and bigger.
Winter months really takes its toll on MPG

Had mine 3 weeks, 750 miles. S Tronic BE, seen up to 56 mpg driving moderately on a 250 trip on a jam packed M6. My proper commute (100 daily) starts on Monday, will update but hoping for around 50-53mpg overall.

My S Tronic Black Edition arrived Saturday, first trip was last night going to Cambridge on the m11.
MPG was just about 42, sitting around 75-80mph. I'm assuming with the engine having under 200 miles on the clock that MPG should improve once it's loosened up a bit?
As for the grunt... bit disappointing but I knew that coming from the powerful 3.0 lump previous. But the s-tronic gearbox and smoothness + quietness in the cabin makes this car more relaxing to drive. Also the 20" wheels don't seem to ruin the ride that much, seems more than comfortable enough over shoddy London roads.

Well, either my car has suddenly decided it's running better as it rolled over 8000 miles or I've found something quite surprising.
Did a round trip from Brighton to Derby this weekend and drove up in my usual setting of comfort steering and dynamic throttle/gearbox but left in D. Did 44.8 according to the trip computer.
Did the way back in S and the car did 47.9 according to the trip com.
I've only ever used S when overtaking to hold a gear before, but it seemed like on the motorway with the engine being willing to change down a little more often, the car was actually in the torque sweet spot more often.
Who knows, but I was very surprised by the numbers. I've never managed to get more than 45mpg in the 14 months I've had the car so it's a new first for me!

Surely better to quote miles per tank to get a real appreciation of 'real world' MPG?
Reading from the DIS on anything less than half a tank of driving isn't meaningful...so Badge did you start on a full tank, if so share how many liters it took to fill up?
I should say that I requested a test drive of an ultra in Sept last year and haven't heard anything back 9 months later...even though I mentoned it to my local dealer :(

Absolutely, but I'm a lazy bugger and have never been overly worried by mpg (other than the opposite end of the spectrum when my TVR used to struggle to get 150 miles from a tank when driven enthusiastically!) enough to bother with 'real world' calculation.
I mention it here because I have simply never driven any real distance with the gearbox in S before and wonder how many others have? Appreciate the dis will not be as accurate as a brim to brim calculation, but as I've never had it read over 45mpg before.
If my S4 hasn't turned up before I go to France in August though then I will try and run some 'real' calculations as will be able to get a nice comparison on a circa 500 mile run each way.

Am just light footed as get 45 DIS in any journey over 11 miles in my C6..but then don't live in a built up area and my ride has covered 110k so nice and loose.
TVR, were you in IT then? Apologies going back to the 90's they were popular with that crowd :)

Just be aware the DIS will be optimistic. Mine has been 6-8% over optimistic based on brim to brim calcs, which seems a normal over read based on other forum posts on the subject. I have just adjusted this with VCDS so it is more reflective of actual economy.
For comparison, I am getting a long term actual average of 38.3 based on a 90 mile daily commute 50:50 motorway/A roads in a 3.0 tdi Quattro Avant

^^^True what is weird is that the speedo is pessimistic so will be doing 67 when it reads 70, I overcame that by fitting 245/45/18's (over oem 245/40/18's) and speedo reads accurately.
My DIS was about 5% out on calculating MPG, so each car is different, however that weirdly came down to 1% following the tyre change

A6 Ultra in record breaking attempt, this looks like an interesting follow.
Paddy power are even taking bets, 5/1 for 1000 miles or under? must be worth a bet?

What is surprising is the tyre pressures used, anyone else with an ultra saloon running 35 front and 38 rear?

And what makes it even more impressive is the car that they were using is not even the 'facelift' (which has the improvements with coasting etc?)

Yeah the website does show facelifted version but the photos of 'their trip' the car they are using is definetely pre-facelift.

Having looked back at some of their tweets, their was another car too (think it might have followed them?) and that was a facelift. The car that they drove had 15,000 miles on the clock so maybe they needed one that was well 'run-in' to achieve the record?
Thought I would give an update this thread.
I have an s line ultra with 19in wheels. Normally average around 50-55mpg on the dis on my 100mile commute. Around 700-750 per tank.
Had a courtesy car se ultra on 17in wheels. I put around 2500 miles on this. This according to the dis I was getting 55-60mpg on my commute and around 800 miles per tank.
Other than the spec these 2 cars are very similar (s tronic, mileage, etc)
was thinking the difference was the wheels and tyres.
My 19s are on good year f1 and the se was on some good year energy saver tyres
that's around a 10% difference from size of wheels/tyres do by my reckoning the BE with 20s must be even worse.
I know the road tax band is different depending on the wheels you get but I thought that was just dvla getting more cash out of us for road tax. Think the se/sline is zero road tax and if you move up to 19s its £30 then £110(?) for the 20s.
I think that's pretty fare if the difference is that significant.
Just my 2p worth.

Exactly what I was thinking, random numbers dose not mean anything without the full spec, inc, how many people, luggage, air con user etc...
But saying all that, I have a 3.0TDI QUATTRO S-Tronic in eco mode on drive select, air con full on, just me, no luggage on a daily drive 20+ miles town to town no motorway, no dual carriage way & I get 38MPG according to DIS, yet if I'm on a short 3-4 mile trip to B&Q I can go as low as 19mpg with a bit of lead footing it & sports mode. So overall I expect all you Ultra guys to be above me in the MPG war.
By the way, I'd love to see the oil consumption figures at the end of a year for an Ultra.

19s and 20s should give the same (higher) consumption than 17s and 18s. The reason is the width of tyres (8.5J vs 8J if I'm not mistaken).
I "tested" this by upping my standard 17s to 20s - the drop in MPG was exactly as expected...

VED is £30 on the Black Editions. I've never been so excited at paying for tax!! Going back to paying hundreds again is going to frustrate the hell out of me!

I'm getting an average of around 800 miles out of a tank. The best I've achieved on a long run was 855.
