I've got a set of continental sport contract 5 on the front of my A6 2.0 TDI. I've been running them with 32 psi, mainly doing motorway miles on my own and I've noticed they are wearing on the middle of the thread as if they're over inflated. I've checked the pressures with different devices and all the trading where closer to 32 psi.
Any advice or recommendations on what pressures to use? I'm about to fit a pair of Goodyear F1 asymmetric2
P.S They are measuring 4mm outside and 2mm in the middle of both tyres.
Thanks

What are the pressures listed on the inside of the drivers door jam for that size?

try 28 then. keep an eye on the depths. or use chalk dust to cover an area of tread, drive a few yards and see how it wears. adjust the pressure up and down until it wears evenly across the tread.

Have you checked against the sticker inside the drivers door?

^ just remember pressures will differ car to car due to drivetrain, overall weight, engine size and type of body.

It recommends 32psi, so they're bang on. The rear tyres are the original Bridgestone and they are running the same pressure as the front and wearing evenly. Thinking it may be the contis tyre construction....

I'll double check the sticker on the door later. Working this evening

I have a similar problem with my factory fitted Bridgestone Turanza tyres (also 245 45 18s 2.0 tdi ultra). They've always been within manufacturer recommended pressures, but both front tyres have worn down towards the legal limit in the middle after 14k miles, but have lots of tread towards the outside. Will be running my new front tyres (Michelin Primacy 3) at slightly lower pressure.

Good tip zollaf re chalk dust.

Good to hear I'm not the only one having this problem. The bridgestone on the rear of my car are the original and have 32k miles on them and they're just on the limit. So I'll fit the contis on the rear and hope they even out and fit the new tyres to the front.

I don't think it's a Conti problem per se, I am running Contis on the front at the pressure recommended by the sticker and had no uneven wear issues.

I checked the label on the drivers door and its showing 32psi.
I fitted the Goodyear F1's today and moved the Conti's to the rear. The Bridgestone that came off the car where wearing slightly on the outside shoulder on both sides...
Carried a 4 wheel laser alignment on the car after fitting the new tyres and the geometry was all within spec. Decided to run the F1's at 29psi and see how the wear goes.
P.S There is so much more grip with the F1's compared to the Conti Sport Contact 5

What's noise and comfort like with those?

jcdub

Comfort wise the F1's is the better tyre. It also gives more feedback through the steering and the car responds quicker to direction changes. I found the Conti to give a vague steering feel especially in the wet.
The roads where wet today so it would be unfair to comment on noise just yet. Although Camskill tyres have the F1 at 70dB and the Conti S Cont 5 at 72dB.. I'll leave further feedback over the coming days when they bed in further.

OK, I'll stick my head above he parapet here and risk getting shot down:

I've not experienced them, although the reviews aren't too bad and surprisingly not in the "ditchfinder" category despite what you might expect. 4 season Sailun Atrezzo Z4+AS look a steal at £48 from tyreleader. Remember, I also have a Skoda, so I'm not proud...

Just don't shoot the messenger.

They look interesting!
They certainly have a tread that would lend itself to cold temperature ops, but does it have a snow flake symbol for Euro skiing?ea

No obvious 3PMS symbol for Alpine use, but should be adequate in the UK if treated with respect, and the open M+S rating at least means they should eject snow and displace water effectively. Just don't go mad in extremes, or more importantly forget to tell anyone else driving your car. Maxxis and other brands do some similar "covert" all-seasons that are generally categorised as summer patterns, but the tightening noise regs are reducing choice by causing pattern extinction with consequent availability issues sometimes leading to weird pricing for certain sizes.

Hi
I've got the Bridgestone Turanza OEM and they have the same wear issue, 2 mm in the middle and 4+ on the edges, rears a little deeper but wear pattern the same. I do mainly motorway miles. Years ago I had a similar issue and the tyre dealer said it was due to high speeds and centrifugal forces and was a known issue with low profile tyres?? I have to say this is a first since that car in the 80s.

So mine are worn out. They have lasted 22500 on the front so not at all bad (motorway miles). I hate the tramlining of the Bridgestones which is worse now they are worn. Audi pays but I have to have premium brands. Any recommends? I'd go Michelin PS3 unless someone has better ideas??

Mine's a C7 Avant S-Line 2.0 TDI 245/45x18

I have to say I'm very happy with the Goodyear F1's I fitted to the front. They're quieter more comfortable and gripper than the conti 5 they replaced, plus the steering is sharper.
I'm running these at 29psi and monitoring the wear

I changed my turanzas for michelins. Far better tyre-better handling, faster turn in and more accurate. I hated the turanzas and didn't trust them-sliding coming out of corners and really poor in the wet. Michelins are far superior and quieter.

1 vote GY, 1 vote Michelin:confused: Casting vote please.......

Which Michelin as I've been offered Primacy 3, PSS and PS3?

A6S

Had the turanza on my pre and they were good till about 4mm then awful in wet/damp conditions but ok in dry. At about 4mm the road noise was significantly higher.
Got the f1 on the fl and they are good in wet and overall a nice tyre for every day use. Comfortable and quiet and these are in 19s compared to the 18s on the pre. Can't comment on wear but 4500 miles and they still look new

I'd vote Mich since they look after my pension. :)

Would go Pilot (Super) Sport rather than Primacy, and PS3 is quite an old pattern now so check for most recent DOT codes; good enough but technology moves on. PSS will be better if expensive, but only you know how much stick you give your car and whether the upgrade from Primacy 3 is worth it.

I've been monitoring wear of the Goodyear F1 i have on the front of the car They've been run with 29 psi since new. Since the contis wore in the middle. Well the Goodyear's are now starting to show signs of the same wear. I'm reluctant to reduce them further. Any advice? Maybe being then back up to the recommended pressures..

Thanks for reminding me, have to go let some pressure out of mine now. How are they doing for wear?, got a set of those last week and I am very impressed, transformed the car.

I think they are wearing well. Better than the Conti's. They are excellent in the wet. They're a little less direct with the pressures dropped to 29psi, but it's a compromise in willing to make if the tyres are to wear consistent across the thread.

Mines quieter, smoother, and seems to turn in quicker, great tyre!

I'm changing from the 2.0tdi to a 3.0tdi and the dealer whos buying the car from me had a good chat. One of the things I mentioned was that the fron tyres on the A6 tend to wear in the center when run at the recommended pressures. He said the guys in the audi garage know of the issue and run the front tyres at 28psi to compensate for it.
Useful information for others suffering the same issue.

Surely if you're doing mainly motorway miles then the tyres are going to run hotter and the pressure is going to rise leading to centre band wear? Of course this won't apply to the M25 nor the M6 around the M62 junction

So I bought a set for future use but I just sold my car today. If anyone wants 4 cheap (or inexpensive ;) ) all-season tyres in time for the autumn then send me a PM. Otherwise they'll just make my other car sit a bit lower and increase my odometer reading by 5%... Read the reviews first though.

On the subject of tyre pressures i was quite amazed that the 235/40/18 tyres on my car required iirc 41psi all round unloaded.
I tried it, and it gave a terrible ride quality. It may be perfect for zooming up and down the autobahn, but not your average UK road.
35psi is much more compliant, with no decrease in MPG.

And that's the idea, every situation is slightly different.
OP, says he's having wear on the middle of the tire.

That traditionally indicates over inflation, but contradiction to that, he runs @ 32psi, under the recommended.
I have a A6 C7 3.0 Tdi, running 36-38 front, 36 rear. on summer tyres, 245-45-R18 Pirelli P-zerro, feels good and even wear...

I use a simple rule of thumb, inflate your tyres on level even ground and look at the tyre shape, under inflate will look saggy, over will round the running surface.
Run them around +/-5 psi to manufacturers each axle balanced.

Remember as the temp drops, air contracts so pressure drops, recheck in winter.

I've temporarily fitted the 245/45 18s from my old allroad to my new one and set the pressures at 39PSI. The tyres are undersized (moreso as they are also worn) and are making a bit of a humming noise. I think I'll drop the pressures, but given that the avant is heavier than the saloon, and the allroad is heavier than he avant; can anyone confirm what the door sticker suggests for this size on a 3.0 TDI avant please?

They don't actually look too bad despite being undersized, and I'll be fitting winters in about a month anyway, so it's a short-term fix for the next 1000 miles or so.

Dropped down to 35 for a 300 mile journey. Don't think they look too bad, and only a bit small. 45 profile helps I think.

It's not an Avant, it's a 3.0TDI Quattro Saloon, but here is the sticker.
Only thing you have to remember is Loaded & unloaded weights.
Generally they are higher on the front because of the engine around 38 & 32 rear unloaded.
A couple of extra pounds if loaded.

But I've always run mine 36 all around, and wear is ok, I keep checking month on month....

Thanks. Forgot to stipulate quattro so you're about as close as I'm going to get.

My journey showed a totally ficticious 47MPG and an additional 5% miles. I'm still trying to work out what's due to the reduced circumference and what's due to the aero effects of reduced section width combined with a lower ride height. The speedo also overreads by about 5MPH at motorway speeds versus GPS. I won't tell my wife.
