Hello again,
my wife was out with our Passat (2.0 170bp CR engine) over the weekend and the engine management light came on, the car lost all power so she pulled over and switched it off but when she started it again it was fine,
I took it to a guy I know who plugged it in and he told me it showed a fault with the EGR valve, I'm told it got stuck!
he said if it happens again I'll have to replace it and that it could stick again tomorrow or it might not happen for 6 months but basically drive on until then..... !!
I don't know if this is related but the previous weekend the battery went flat all of a sudden, even though it was in daily use and showed no signs etc, so I jumped it and its been starting fine everyday since?
any thoughts,
thanks
Rob.

What were the fault codes? If you post the codes on here a pointy headed type will interpret them.

A dealer will charge you 80.00 yoyos maybe more. Look at this map for someone near you with VCDS where in Ireland are you? https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?ll=56.231139,-2.779541&iwloc=0004c505cfcb6158e0447&msa=0&spn=3.493691,10.821533&mid=zwQHurSsCMz8.kMTwqF0PoXwc

I'm in Laois so either Sheehy in Carlow or Moores of Portarlington I presume...
the guy I brought it to wasnt a dealer but does diagnostics, he didnt go into much detail about the fault other than saying that the last fault was showing up as EGR valve, he was that quick on his laptop that I couldnt read the code, lol
can there be different fault codes relating to the EGR valve?

It depends on what software he used to scan the car. You can get weird results with generic OBD scanners and the code you had could have been there for years. Look on done deal there's sure to be someone near you (usually Polish) that will have VCDS and can do a proper scan

thanks for that, they are not too far from me either,
for what its worth the guy I brought it to was Polish and he had what I thought was VCDS, he plugged his laptop into the socket under the dash, I think my car details popped up on the screen before he looked for recent faults,
my steering is slightly heavy in my opinion so he checked for faults there but found none.... he just said thats the way it is,

If he had VCDS he should have gotten some live data

Mine is going into the garage on Monday for the same problem, last week it was on for most of the week then we drove 230 miles with one stop and no warning light, a short two mile journey the next day and it was back on again, then another 230 miles home and no sign of the infuriating little ****. Don't you just love these cars when everything is doing just what it should.
