Hello all,

I recently bought a 2010 (july) mk6 Golf GTI (without cruise control), I thought I could do without the cruise control but I really miss it. I contacted the VW dealer that I bought the car from and was informed that it could be fitted to my car no problem (this was after they checked the chassis number etc). They ordered up the stalk and the car was booked in today to have the work done. I was told the work would take 1-2 hours, after about 3/4 of an hour the workshop manager came to the waiting area to inform me that they could not carry out the job as there was a coding compatibility issue....

I just wanted to ask if anyone here has had this option retrofitted successfully? I have done a lot of searching tonight and there is a lot of conflicting info regards this. I was wondering if the car could come factory fitted with this option then why can it not be installed afterwards?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Chees

I asked my dealer if they could fit cruise control they said it depends on the build date as in 2010 they added another £400 module so it makes it more expensive.

Steering wheel module needs to be checked whether its compatible with cruise, I suggest getting somebody to check this with VCDS and cross reference the PN on the RT website.

If VW checked via your VIN then I can't see why they can't code it.

You should fit it yourself, it's not hard to do.

Ok Chris, i have VCDS myself. Can you tell me what i need to do to check the steering wheel module with it?

Thanks

just post a scan of address 16 on here then people can compare with a vehicle of similar build date but with the additional cruise control.

as said there may well be issues with controllers and subsystems.......there are various additional controllers for MFSW switches.

makes you wonder whether some dealers know what they were doing.

if i'm correct as well as recoding steering 16 , engine 01, abs 03 and possibly instruments 17 need recoding too.

Ok here it is:

I have cruise but a different age and model (so different module) so can't help with reference to your gti, hopefully someone has a similar car that can compare.

In the meantime you if you look in the coding in that module does it open the long coding helper, if so is there a tick box for cruise control? If there's no option then i guess that's the issue.

I also noticed on the RossTech site that attempts to retrofit cruise have been complicated by missing wiring on some models (my 2010). As you have a gti i'd be surprised if this was your problem but you never know?

A snippet from - Steering Wheel Control Module Versions - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Steering_Wheel_Control_Module_Versions#Part_Number _5K0-953-549)

Gives

5K0-953-549-D Highline #1

#1 being - : Depending on the hardware version of this module, it MAY or MAY NOT allow Cruise Control Retrofitting, so replacing the Steering Wheel Control Module may be required.

As above check if it allows coding for CC and report back.

ok, so had a look at the module through VCDS and there is no option in the coding (using the long coding helper) for cruise control...

So i'm also looking at now having to change the module to allow cruise control to be fitted, does anyone know what sort of price these are? I really want the cruise control option but if it's going to be over £400, well it might just not be worth it.

I have been in touch with Walsh Motors (Belfast) to see what they can come up with, have to call them back tomorrow.

There are plenty of sites that talk about retrofitting cruise control if you. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a121/KStanier/google.gif

I've found out its after week 42 of 2010 you need the £400 module.

Thanks to everyone who replied to my question. I emailed Agnew's In Belfast (VW Dealer) and this is the reply I got:

"Hi Paul,

I forwarded your details onto the parts team for them to check up on it.

The kit they had priced previous was an accessory kit for the golf model but after specifically checking your chassis number for a compatible cruise control kit, They could not find anything. After Speaking to VW, they have sent us a part number for a kit that will suit but the price would be £275 fitted."

So the car is booked in for next Thursday!

Ok so finally i have cruise control fitted to my car! lol

Believe it or not the first "VW Master Technician" gave up!!! They had to call in a sub to finish the job.....

Car was with VW 2 days, coding issues.... this was even after the tech boys in Germany providing the code

For future reference the Cruise Control kit that was fitted: 5K0 054 691 D (contains module/slip ring/both stalks)

Not if you have access to VAG-COM\VCDS.
