Hi,
Sorry if this seems like I'm hijacking this thread but I have a question which is relevant to age.
I have jus bought a 2008 A4 2.0TDi SE 120. Engine code CAGC. Love the car and drives great.
I have been reading some threads on forums that the early B8 engines still have the problem with the balancer shaft and hex key for the oil pump.
Have any of you guys with early B8's had any issues with this or have any of you's replaced it as a precaution?
Thanks.

I was under the impression that it was the PD engines that suffered from this, not the CR ones, and I am equally sure that CAGC is a CR engine code - someone that knows like Crasher or A6_Chris will be able to tell you for sure though.

Yes I thought that also and was one of the reasons I bought a b8 a4 as I was originally lookin a b7 but after readin online it seems the early b8's suffer from it too.

I read it on some threads from different forums. I will try hunt here and find some again. Here is one from Audi sport.

I have been on kmb parts and see that they do a balancer shaft and hex key kit and has A8 engine codes on the list of compatible engines for the kit.
Products - KMB Parts Direct (http://www.kmbpartsdirect.co.uk/products.html#kit8)
It's kit 9 on that page.

I previously had a B8 TDI with 143ps and the engine was good as gold.
It's the flywheel you have to watch out for, although I'm not sure if that particular issue only affects the 143?

interesting thread/link but I've never heard of this issue on the b8 cr
and that's the first I've seen of it on the net , they are just saying they've heard but has anybody acutely seen anybody with this problem ?

This guy over on Audi sport replaced his as a precautionary measure but said when he checked the old one there was some movement in the hex key.
only went in for an oil change (http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/showthread.php?t=185774)
Thanks

As far as I know even pd engines had a modified gear driven oil pumps from 2007.
All 2.0 TDI in A4 B8 manufactured before 19.10.2009 have the problem with balancer shaft.

Says who ? I've not here of even one person saying there balance shaft/ oil pump has gone
everyone says the cr engine is fine and not affected by this problem
instead of the 2 people that I've seen say it happened show me a post/thread about it , the 2.0pd is well nown for the problem
but not the 2.0cr
im not saying an oil pump will never go , stuff brakes , it's a fact , but this is not a common problem

19.10.2009 is a date when VW changed the design - the hex axle was prolonged from 77mm to 100 mm - perhaps also changes in balancer. All 2.0 CR used in Audis / VW Passats before this date share the issue with PD engines 2007+ .. My car has a production date 10/2008 so I checked with Audi importer in Norway - confirmed and they refused to do anything about it ( no callback action ). My car has a low milage 85k so I feel safe for a moment .. But I have to do something about it soon - most likely sell ...

Im not disputing they changed the design , they may well have . But the cr engine is 6 years old now , and I have yet to see post about the oil pump / balance shaft , go on the uk forums and there's loads about 2.0pd engine , where's all the cr engines balance shaft problems ? I can't find any , and a forum is the first place people come when they have problems
