View Full Version : Question Engine Workshop/Glow Plug Symbol Flashing/Car Won't Start

Had an issue 3 times in just over a week where my 2007 B6 Passat won't start, it's a 2.0 170bhp diesel sport estate with 113k on the clock and a full dealer service history.

I put the key in, wait a few seconds until the glow plug light goes off then start the engine. It starts then immediately cuts out, the dash makes a binging noise, the glow plug symbol starts to flash and engine workshop appears on the display.

If I try and start the car immediately afterwards it won't even turn over.

If I remove the key and wait 30-60 seconds and retry it starts first time (or it has the 3 times it's happened so far).

I don't have vag-com so I can't check the error codes, I've read a few posts about a possible issue with the brake light switch? I've checked my brake lights and they are fully working.

Any ideas before I take it in to the dealer?

Sounds like the ign key ecu fault tbh, brace yourself for a £350 repair.

Brilliant!

Just had to move my car at work and it took 3 attempts to start. Started fine this morning before work though.

I better get it taken in I guess.

Just taken it in to a garage near work who uses our garage software, he's plugged it in for me and got the following

05488 Unknown Component - Implausible Signal

I've googled it back in the office as the garages internet was down and came across this - 17978/P1570/005488 - Ross-Tech Wiki (http://wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17978/P1570/005488)

It sounds the same as what I'm experiencing

Possible Symptoms
Engine starting but stalling immediately

I did swap the key to the spare (brand new never used) about 6 weeks ago as the original wasn't opening the central locking (although it did unlock the boot and lock the doors and start the car), the problem I'm experiencing only started in the last week though so not sure if it's related.

Any help appreciated.

It's not the key it's the contact surface inside the dash hole, some have managed to diy it but I wouldn't recommend it, VW dealers now replace the broken bits rather than the whole steering column and that brings the cost down from a Rio to about £350

I've got someone hooking it up to VCDS/VAG-COM tomorrow to confirm my worst fears :(

Many thanks for your input.

Well keep fingers crossed that it's not that, it could be a couple of glow plugs gone down or the relay, if so the plugs are £23 each at GSF for NGK ones or £12 each for unbranded, the jist of things I've read says buy NGK ones, the relay is anything from £20 - £60 depending on if it's a eBay one or a dealer one, again I'd harbour on getting the real McCoy in this case, let us know anyway and lets hope it's the cheaper fix.

02811 - Control Module for Electronic Steering Column (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_nkw=steering+column) Lock (J764)

01044 - Control Module Incorrectly Coded

Two classic indications the steering column/key barrel is dying, all the other immobiliser faults are normal if this happens they will clear once the steering is fixed, it's default is to shut the car down when the code pops up.

You may be able to try re-coding the keys but I think it will be the lock has gone dirty and tired.

Thanks again, is this the right way to re-code the keys?

If your code is lost you will have to reprogram the fob. On the 2006 Passat, maybe the same on the 2007, you must pry the cover off of the manual key slot. Observe from the bottom there is a slot. Place the key in the slot, at the same time pry from the bottom and the whole cap will come off revealing the keyhole. With a good fob put power to the car but do not start the engine. With a manual key, lock the door. Now press the fob you are trying to train twice. It should take the code.

Unlock the door, remove the good fob and test the new fob. It should work.,

RichardSEL

AFAIK that method will work on a fob that's previously been trained for that vehicle. Not a blank. Nor a fob that's previously been coded for another vehicle.
Havn't tried it myself but saved a similar description in case needed

There is nothing wrong with the keys. You need a new steering lock. Take it to VW and get a new one fitted. You can DIY it if you are up to it but it isn't easy. See details here:B6 STEERING FAULT - PASSAT (https://sites.google.com/site/1810martin/b6-steering-fault)

Press which part of the fob?

iirc you need VCDS to program keys, gone are the days of the self learner keys

Nick, how long since you changed the fob batteries?

If it's a long time or never it's possible it's just dead batteries causing it, I think it will be the lock though given the history of lock fails these cars have had, worth a try for a packet of watch batteries though.

RichardSEL
25-05-2013, 06:58 AM
AFAICR the battery is a CR2032, same as found in older PCs' BIOS as a keep alive cell. Maplins do them.
Both my fobs are over seven years old, havn't changed either battery. One fob's in daily use

Couldn't find anything on Ross-Tech's VCDS Wiki except for Generation 3 Golf. Could this be an urban myth?

I've spoken to VW customer services, they've given me a reference number to take to the dealer. They need to run their own scan and then speak to customer services about getting part/all of it paid for so fingers crossed on that.

If it is the steering lock the dealer price should be just over £300 fitted.

I'm told steering column and control unit.... oh and my tyres, and my brakes, and my discs (all the standard dealer things they recommend are done at the same time).

VW customer services promised to call me back first thing in the morning, funnily enough the problem hasn't happened since Monday 27th May and I've started the car over 30 times since.

This fault is often temperature dependent. Gets worse in the cold. You may be ok all summer!! now. I'm surprised they think the steering controller is faulty as well. It is usually just the lock although the controllers do fail too. The steering lock is only £75 but is fiddly to fit and only VW can code it to the car.

Nick it's always a bad sign when you ask for one thing and the dealer offers you other work, have a look at your brakes and tyres and see for yourself if they are after work or simply need doing, a disc can have a lip on it to a degree so simply because you can feel a slight edge doesn't mean you need new discs.

The tyres need doing and it's booked in today for that.

Discs/pads looks fine but I'll check when they are doing the tyres.

In other news, VW Customer Services have offered to pay 70% of the cost of the repair :)
