Hi all,
I have just chopped in my B7 A4 for a 54 plate A6 2.0ltr TDI SE.
So far so good and it is lovely to drive (although a bit slower than my A4 :()
The only problem is when I pull away, depress the clutch to change gear and let the revs fall, there is a very noticeable knocking/rumble coming from the back of the engine/through the clutch pedal.
It is incredibly annoying and concerning.. Anyone know what it could be?
Worth mentioning, there is absolutely no slip
Bump??

Simon. Are you sure yours is a C5 A6? I thought the 2.0 tdis were only introduced in the C6 models.
I'd suspect the clutch release bearing is knocking, and I'd worry that it might be the DMF, and I'd hope that someone like crasher would be along soon to advise.

Hi,
No I am not convinced. It could be a C6 but cant seem to find the answer.
I am worried its the DMF too. £900 all in including clutch!
I am thinking of buying the parts from GSF and doing it myself.
Any thoughts on that? Thanks for your input.

Look at the rear numberplate. If it's in a black area with 2 red foglight spaces above it, it's a C5:

If it's just paintwork around it, it's a C6

1) Was this fault/noise present during the test drive?
2) How has the supplying dealer responded?

No not that I could hear and it was a private sale..
Does it sound like the DMF?

Rumbling on depressing the clutch, I'd guess release bearing, judder when engaging clutch DMF failing. FWIW you could fit a solid flywheel, but that may (by passing through theengine vibrations and not damping them as a DMF does) stress other parts of the transmission, allegedly. However as you can remap for 25-30% extra power without damaging the transmission, I'm not convinced.

If it is DMF I wouldn't go solid wheel... in this post A8 Tech shows he has fitted them to 1.9 TDi's (Link:- Post 6 (http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?123399-What-damage-by-driving-with-damaged-dmf&p=665327#post665327) )
But...
A solid flywheel is not advised as there is no cushion when taking the drive up and extra load will be present on the input shaft
Now above would concern me...

No juddering at all, just "feedback" through the pedal and an obvious rattling in time with the revs dropping but only when clutch is engaged.

As I've never yet had a DMF issue on any past cars I've owned can't comment :Blush2:...
But sometimes symptoms can differ car to car on same fault... plus depends on type of wear/damage...
It is difficult for someone probably to give you an exact answer via the web unless they have had same symptoms of fault...
Perhaps have inspected? you have some pointers/info now...

Simon
I'm getting something very similar posted a thread on it. The operation of the clutch isn't affected at all on mine, no juddering no slipping it's a faint noise that's all it is when the clutch is depressed. When i get chance I'll have it looked at by a local indi
It's hard to describe the exact symptoms because on mine as said above it's more of a rumbling noise than something I can physically feel like a judder through the pedal or transmission

Annoying isnt it! The only way I can describe the sound is... Put the clutch down to change gear and you hear what would sound like a ping-pong ball being shaken in a tin can...? Sound similar?
I do feel so vibration on the pedal but I dont know if that is placebo effect or not?!
If you could report back that would be great. I will get mine looked at too.
