Hi
I know there are various posts concerning heater blower motor problems and many refer to the need to replace a resistor.
How do I know if the problem is the resistor or if it is the motor itself?
I have removed the glove box and the motor and I cannot see a separate resistor - is it integral?
Audi A4 Avant 1997 2.8 SE with climate control.
Thanks

Since you have Climate Control, the fan is controlled by that. Without, and you will have a Resistor. If the motor isn`t running try a direct power supply to motor. This will give you an idea where problem lies.

Hi Alan
I have now done this and the motor is running.
If it's not the resistor or the motor any ideas what else it might be?
Thanks
Alex

If the motor stops and starts and often comes to life again after going over a bump, the brushes are worn and need replacing or fit a new motor,

The motor wasn't running at all. I removed it from the car and attached it to a DC supply and it runs fine. Could this still be the brushes?

Unlikely. If you've got any sort of meter check and see if the motor is being supplied power when it's installed.

I've now reattached the motor to the car after testing and it is currently running OK.
This may indicate that it is indeed an intermittent problem and could be down to the brushes.
The unit is sealed and it is difficult to actually get to the motor to replace the brushes.
It is part number 8D2820021 and it looks like this:

hi, the motor isnt sealed, there are 3 rubber bungs
press these in and down and the lot will seperate.

then release the two clips holding the springs that hold the brushes
unsolder the old brushes, fit new brushes and solder in place.

re fit

job done;)

Thanks all who offered advice. Bought brushes from eBay and replaced them in about 30 mins. Blower working perfectly and at the cost of a tenner. If I can help any others let me know.

It would be great if you could send me some pics as my heater motor has just stopped working. My email address is j.maclean2@sky.com
I will be really grateful if you can do this for me.
Thanks again.

Hi, I have just got a 2003 VW Sharan 130 Carat TDI. Air con not working. regassed today and no leaks found but still not working. Then noticed the blower only works on 3 and 4. even when on, still no cool air coming out. There is also a noise when ignition is turned on just prior to starting engine, sounds like a stuck flap moving about in the dash.

Any ideas if blower resistor will sort my air con and blower probs? I have been advised by an air con expert that the resister is at fault but I can't see how this will sort the air con, grateful for some other advice in here.

Secondly, any ideas how to get to the resistor and possibly the fan as I fear this may be at fault too.
Hope someone can help, on a seriously tight budget and can't afford garage prices :(

Thanks

Well after such a kind offer, I truly hope you can help me!
I have another thread on this but think this one is closer to my problem. I have a 2003 Sharan TDi. AC light wasn't working on blower settings 1 and 2. I replaced the blower motor resistor (actually I had it repaired) and now the blower works as it should on all 4 settings, and AC light comes on after a regas and confirmed no leaks in system. BUT .... the depressing news today..... my local mechanic had it in to have a second go at finding the problem. Firstly a diagnostics check found NO FAULTS at all on the car. He found no voltage was getting to the air con compressor so he then manually put voltage to it and this fired up the compressor but it made an awful noise and he said the compressor is definitely going to need replacing. If only that was all I would get a used replacement (short of cash) but he said that won't fix it because still that doesn't solve the problem preventing voltage getting to the compressor. He said it can't be just a broken wire because both ends of the feed to the compressor are showing earths so must be connected. He is at the extent of his expertise here and does not know what to suggest next other than an air con specialist with knowledge of this vehicle, a 2003 VW Sharan 1.9 TDI.

CAN ANYONE HELP ME? PLEASE!

Hi All,

I am looking at trying this fix on my 2011 A6 only difference being that my heater blower is located in the engine bay rather than behind the dash board, does anyone know if the part is the same or is it slightly different? also is there a picture anywhere showing the plugs that separate the motor from the housing?

Many Thanks in advance

Paul
