    Hi,

I've pretty much got my heart set on a 130hp TDI Saloon Passat, so have been looking at reviews for them, and the issues that have commonly appeared are:

Split turbo hose's (Some people have had this problem more than once), Water Pump, Air Flow Meter and EGR Valve.

I also read about recalled Gearbox's(?), Footrest's breaking (What on earth is a footrest?!) and also that they eat front tyres..

Just wanted to ask exactly how common are these problems?

And also how to check for any of these issues when actually looking at the car..

    Thanks,

    Dan.

I've never heard anything about recalled gearboxes, they are generally pretty solid boxes. Mine is a 6 speed with 90k on it, still quiet box and good gear change.

    Re:
Split turbo hose's (Some people have had this problem more than once), Water Pump, Air Flow Meter and EGR Valve. - I don't think the passat is any worse than any other car for this. It would still be wise to check the hoses are in decent condition before buying.

Re: eating front tyres, it is quite a heavy car so I can understand the point here, but I don't think it's any worse on tyres than any other car I've had. Obviously if you hammer it, the tyres will wear faster than normal.

As for the footrest, mine is solid...

They are great cars, and they Tdi is a great engine, you can't go wrong. Just look at the number of them used as taxis. A good motor

I put 24k on my tyres and they are still ok , had the car 2 years and not spent a penny on it yet , other than for oils filters and brakes.

MY only gripe is front wheel drive in the wet added to 130 bhp of grunt which i just remapped to 178 bhp and it sucks big style.

Are they easily accessible to check?

    Also common faults-

plenum chamber drain blockages causing flooding of electrics.(CMM)
leaks into CMM through pollen filter.
leaks via rear door skins into rear footwells.
freezing rear washer hoses pushing off washer, soaking boot m/switch and setting off alarm.
VNT carboning up causing limp home mode.
    vacuum leaks.
    electric fans breaking.
    headlight adjusters breaking.
    faulty temp senders

Wifes 1st passat and has experienced most of above bar leaks from plenum to interior because this is checked regularly.

    Regards,
    Mike

What precautions should I consider for each of these points?
