Am I correct that the MAP sensor for a 2001 Passat TDI 130 is the sensor in the plastic inlet pipe at the back of the engine, held in by 2 screws and connected with a 4-pin plug?

I ordered a replacement from the local dealer and they've given me a plastic housing that fits into the inlet tract and has the MAP sensor built in. They also say I have to return the old version (exchange).

I want t be sure before taking it back and telling them it's the wrong one.

Hi Canetoad , I believe they have given you the wrong part . The location of this part on the TDI I'm not sure , but I do know that the MAP sensor measures "Manifold Absoloute Pressure" whereas the MAF sensor (the part they supplied) measures Mass Air Flow , so they are different . On the petrol 1.8t the MAP sensor is on the intercooler , so I imagine the TDI would be the same . Maybe if you post what the cars symptoms were someone could tell you whether you need the Maf sensor or the MAP sensor . hope this helps , Calum .

Yes, you are right, that is the MAP sensor, what VW call a "Thrust sensor" They have given you an AVM (Air Volume Meter) as they think you meant the MAF (Mass Air Flow) which is another name for the AVM as is AMM for Air Mass Meter. AVM is used on the parts system and AMM in the workshop system, VAG don’t use the term MAF so that is why I don’t use it, it causes confusion. The part you need is 038 906 051 C and costs about £42 and is not exchange.

I got an overboost error code 17965 (Charge Pressure positive deviation) and symptoms described matched those in another post where the owner replaced the MAP sensor and cured the problem. For the sake of £40 I thought it was worth replacing to see if it sorted the problem.

I removed mine and it was covered in oily residue so looked like it could do with replacing.

I'll drop it back tomorrow and get them to order the correct part.

    Thanks for the information.

If you have VAG-COM, you can check the output of the Thrust sensor in Measuring Blocks 08, group 011, it should not go over around 2500mBar, when they play up they misread to about 2880mBar and cause the 17965 error. I have even seen them stick and not drop down until “encouraged” with a little tap.

Crasher, do I need a basic license vag-com to do this? I have version 409.1 I think. Haven't had it long and have only used it to check for error codes.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

Shareware 409 will let you do Measuring Blocks 08 but it is limited

I have never used the shareware version. You may have to register it.

Finally checked the MAP sensor readings using vag-com. The sensor read as high as 2983.5 in the log file just before going into limp mode. I've ordered a replacement MAP sensor.

Many thanks for the replies, especially Crasher.

Replaced the MAP sensor and car is still going into limp mode when in fifth/sixth gear going uphill (usually). So that's the Maf and MAP sensors replaced. Should I replace the N75 next or drive it off a cliff and buy a horse?

Run vag-com again. Your MAP sensor might have been telling the truth and you really are over boosting. If it still reads too high it may be the turbo.
