    Hi Rallyboygower

I had chain rattle on mine... an A6 Avant 3.0 TDi occurred at about 73-75K on clock... my symptoms where only at start up for 1-2 seconds...

I've just had fix for all chains & tensioners, HPFP belt & tensioner, AUX belt & tensioners, Tiptronic oil change as well price was £2.2K inc VAT

As engine is removed they did a oil change, coolant change, re-gas of A/C system

These are P/N and supersession history

    057 109 218 G DROPPED 01/10/2005
    057 109 218 J DROPPED 01/12/2006
    057 109 218 K CURRENT

Even though my car first registration was 09/2005 many parts have production dates of 6-7 months before that
So going only by my personal experience I think your car qualify having suspect tensioner
My advice and as you can tell from others posts in thread get checked and done

£2K is big bill but if you take out full service cost which you getting then £1500-£1700 is not bad price for amount of work...

On above photo note the shape of right top bank chain lower end of it....

    From my owner/meddler knowledge

Here is a graphic of a tensioner, please note this is not the exact tensioner just for illustration

Tensioning piston (1) applies pressure to chain tensioner slide pad (2) to take slack out of chain in conjunction with adjuster piston and slide pad adjuster...

There is an oil reservoir (3) and starting locking pins (4), IMO this must be to keep tensioner at appropriate place for engine start up so rattle not occur and my view is that it must remember from last shut down of engine the position tensioner was at...

Ignore red box items as these are not on the 2.7/3.0 TDi from what I understand and what workshop who done work said the tensioners are purely mechanical and uses oil to make adjustment, etc

No, it was just a unmounted tyre as a cushion in case of trolley giving way,etc... you will note tyre is not depressed... so not resting on sump
If you note on photo to left and right of engine are the lower supports with wheels for the trolley hoist thing

    Hate seeing threads like this
Mine is a 2.7 2008 model (Auto) and I too have the clatter until around 1500 rpm. What is annoying however is it does not always happen. In a week, maybe twice if not 3 times...And a fix could be just turning the engine off and on again.
Once I turned the engine on, then remembered I had forgotten something in the house so I turned it off... 30 seconds later on again...the clattering was there for the 15-20 seconds first time, but not the second time.
Am I to worry too? Mines only done 42000 so in comparison to the higher mileage ones above...mines a baby!

I did report this to Audi during warranty but they could not reproduce it

AFAIK if it is chain tensioner you would get rattle at startup...

On a previous VW I used to get a clicking noise which could be described as a rattle... this was due to the hydraulic tappet followers needed replacing...
Symptoms were no noise at start-up, but later when you say stopped at lights rattle/clicking would start then as soon as you revved engine to move away all was fine again until revs dropped again...

Reference link:- Hydraulic tappet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
There are a number of potential problems with hydraulic lifters. Frequently, the valvetrain will rattle loudly on startup due to oil draining from the lifters when the vehicle is parked. This is not considered significant provided the noise disappears within a couple of minutes, typically it usually only lasts a second or two. A rattle that does not go away can indicate a blocked oil feed or that one or more of the lifters has collapsed due to wear and is no longer opening its valve fully. The affected lifter should be replaced in the latter situation.

Argh... I can feel the paranoia setting in the further I read into this one.

Im going to Devon tomorrow and I know I'm going to get shouted at by SWMBO for hanging my head out the window and muting the radio at every tiny noise....
