The alternator pulley clutch is seized and the belt will be jumping. The pulley is about £30 to £60 depending on the manufacturer of the alternator and you will need a 14mm spline socket to replace it(i think its 14).You can remove the alternator with out loosening the lock carrier, remove the viscous pulley and remove the alternator and remove the pulley. When they seize the pulley cant slip with the ribbed belt and the tensioner takes the strain and can snap off.

I read somewhere else on the forum that there's a special tool required to remove the pulley. Is that the case or is the 14mm spline socket all I'll need?

Don't want to start "fiddling" until I know I have all the tools required!

Bump this thread this evening. I changed the alternator pulley on mine but can't remember now. Will check tonight for you should I remember.

If I remember correctly I used a 14mm spline tool. I had this problem on my T5 too it is really common on VAG TDIs.

Sorry Eeyore I didn't reply yesterday evening.

I indeed bought a set from Andrew Page Motors. It is made by Laser and is an M10 spline.

Here is a link to one on e-bay, it is exactly the same as what I bought.

Yes it is a male splined adapter the locates in the pulley and an allen key passes through the whole in the centre and undoes the retaining bolt. Audi refer to this tool as '3400' Regards Peter

This could just be the pump belt that is loose. If the clutch pulley sprag clutch has failed the serpentine belt will flap quite a lot at tick over. You can also check the clutch, as your engine code implies you do have one, by inserting a soft object like a lolly pop stick/ paint mixer through the air vents and try turning the alternator fan clockwise. Regards Peter
