    A6 1.9TDI 52 REG AVANT HAVING TROUBLE WHEN TURNING AT SLOW SPEED SOUNDS LIKE TRACTOR
    i have change the p/s pump, belt tensioner and the belt, and it is still the same, the belt is making more noise then the engine at tickover, lift the revs up a little and it is ok.....

    The alternator pulley clutch is seized and the belt will be jumping.The pulley is about £30 to £60 depending on the manufacturer of the alternator and you will need a 14mm spline socket to replace it(i think its 14).You can remove the alternator with out loosening the lock carrier,remove the viscous pulley and remove the alternator and remove the pulley.When they seize the pulley cant slip with the ribbed belt and the tensioner takes the strain and can snap off.

    Would anyone suggest I have same problem?

    To explain:

    Only started this week, when starting from cold, seems the power steering has started to groan, and only when I turn the wheel. When the car warms up the groan goes away. The actual steering itself feels normal.

    I've just bought a 2003 Avant 1.9 TDI and I think i may have this alternator clutch problem? I'd appreciate any help/confirmation from anyone who's experienced it...

    On full lock the steering makes a loud "intermittent squeak" (not the normal squeal I've had on other cars) and I've noticed that when reversing at very low speed there is sometimes some judder through the steering. Could this be the alternator pulley clutch?

    When Turning At Slow Speed Sounds Like Tractor And The Belt Slips, Once The Revs Are Up, The Engine Is As Normal.

    I read somewhere else on the forum that there's a special tool required to remove the pulley. Is that the case or is the 14mm spline socket all I'll need?

    Don't want to start "fiddling" until I know I have all the tools required!

    Bump this thread this evening. I changed the alternator pulley on mine but can't remember now. Will check tonight for you should I remember.

    If I remember correctly I used a 14mm spline tool. I had this problem on my T5 too it is really common on VAG TDIs.
