I am wanting to change the oil in the gearbox of my 2.8 Quattro. 1st gear is a bit noisy and for peaqce of mind, I figure it can't hurt to change the oil /ensure the correct amount is in there.

Can anyone advise what oil and how much? Does it involve a diagnostic test? The local Audistealer tells me they have to do a computer diagnostics test and it's not as simple as draining it out and refilling from the side plug. Min £110 (1hr) labour + 8litres of oil + VAT! £200+!! Am I wrong or does this smell strongly of a daddy cows rear end?.

They're speaking ********. The transmission is a sealed for life unit and Audi don't quote a service interval unless you experience problems. However, it's something you should consider if miles are high and 1st gear is noisy. No guarantee this will fix it - as any transmission problems could be worn engine/transmission mounts and an indication the clutch is on the way out.

One word of warning - always release the filler bolt first. You don't want to drain the damn thing only to find you can't refill it. Worth doing the rear diff too. Details here hombre!

Doing mine in the next couple of weeks. Car is on 107k.

Thanks for that. I was pretty certain they were trying to lift my leg - what a bunch of t**sers. The first gear noise, I heard that it's a weakness of that tramsmission - something to do with a needle roller bearing and fretting on the mainshaft I think. But its never terminal, it just carries on for as long as. I'm hoping fresh oil might reduce the noise a bit. All other gears are fine as is the clutch. Very smooth and snickety gate on it too - just sounds like a demonic damn food mixer in first!
