    Hi.

I just parked my 2004 car, that I've had for 2 years, with the "Nose" pointing UP my sloping drive, instead of the usual DOWN position and there is evidence of an oil leak dripping from the back of the plastic engine guard / bashplate.

I can only assume that this bashplate has held the oil until I parked in this way. Obviously, I could never park "Nose-up" again - problem solved???!!!

I'd sooner find out where the leak is coming from though.

Can anyone please tell me how to remove the bashplate so I can investigate further.

    thanks

It's held on by a mixture of torx headed screws and a few bolts. Self evident when you have a look.

I think he wants to know how to remove the engine undertray.

It is held on by two black plastic quick release screws in the front of each wheel arch, 3 quick release screws along the rear edge, 2 along the front edge and a nut front centre.

OOPS! Got muddled with the B6. That's got screws and bolts. Must remember to put brain in gear before typing.

chances are its comming from the lower intercooler pipe , common isssue and no cause for alarm , if it is from there , undo the pipe and mop up oil from inside pipe and reach into the intercooler and mop up in there too.

And when you come to re-fitting the undertray, it's probably a good idea to get some new fixing widgets, because once disturbed they never seem to be the same again. The parts are cheap enough.

If you discover the oil is seeping from the intercooler pipes, it can indicate some wear in the pipe fitting where it joins the turbo.

I removed the plastic tray / shield from the underside, which was indeed self-explainatory

The oil was indeed coming from a "Lower" pipe of some sort

A large bore (2" approx) pipe on the lower nearside at the front. The pipe clips on with a steel ring and connects to a black plastic box

    Is this the intercooler?

I mopped up the oil from around the area, worrying that if I undid the pipe, the engine would drain on me!. I then ran the engine to op. temp. and no further leaking

    1. Is this the right pipe to undo and mop up inside?
    2. What causes this leak and will it happen all over again (On my newly paved drive!)

    Muchas G folks

    1. When you undo pipe at lower corner, any oil trapped will run out.
    2. This is normal 'cos it is the lowest point in the air system so oil mist collects here.

black plastic box is indeed the bottom of the intercooler , quite a bit of oil in here ,have kitchen roll at the ready , simply lift that big clip at the top where its shaped and pull the pipe apart , after cleaning be sure to lift the clip again when shoving pipe back in , this oil mist takes about a year to build up ,so you can usually include cleaning it out on an annual service. also run the engine and have a good old pull on that pipe joint before putting underbelly trays back on , that pipe is prone to blowing off if its not secured properly and you will break down when it does , once your happy its on good and proper put your trays back on .
