My quest to find a wood-like dash trim for my Passat has not gone too well - I've had to sell the genuine Walnut burr VW trim as the 2009 cluster fascia has been facelifted. Although I only paid £30 on ebay for it, someones got a great deal for £26!!!

However I have bought a burled wood strip of vinyl which is arriving in the next few days and am deciding whether or not to try a DIY job... I've got plenty of old trim to test it out on, but initial thoughts were that if it did look decent, I would probably have to add a few coats of clear lacquer or else it would look stupid.

Has anyone thought of doing the above, or am I just bonkers?

I'd say the thinner it is the better the finish will be, you could use the water method as well, spray the surface with water before you stick down, then you can move it around and get the bubbles out, then finally trim the excess away, hth.

It all depends on the visual quality of the burled wood vinyl. If it's decent I'll go ahead with this DIY job as I think it could look stunning for the fraction of the OEM cost. However I need to work out how best to do the cluster fascia - lots of circle die cuts... could be interesting...

I'd be down the modelling shop and get a really sharp scalpel, I too thought of the clocks issues, one thing I would do though is to knock up a template, take the clocks facia out and use some sort of material that you can trim to shape easily, I'd also prepare myself for failure as well, as the stick on kits are precision cut, nobody will get that level of finish by hand I'm afraid, personally I'd bite it and get the folding out and have the oem from VW, if it's just the 3 pieces you want to do I think they come to around £180 from VW, hth.

some like them, some hate them and think they look cheap... i've always quite liked them. Fortunately, unlike the stick-on dash kits from ebay this method is not permanent - if I change my mind it's not to difficult to remove.

i'm also modifying only the top level trim - I'm not going overboard with the radio surround, climate surround etc...
