I have a tiptronic (5-speed automatic gearbox) in 1.9TDI Final Limited Edition Avant. The dashboard display of P R N D S now flashes when the ignition is switched on. Gears can still be selected in normal auto mode and the car still drives okay. I am worried however that this is a pre warning of an expensive repair.

The owners manual refers to a back-up control system which is in place should a gearbox fault occur. Has anyone else experienced this please, and if so, what was the outcome?

Get it fault code scanned, probably a faulty f125 switch which means a new or repaired box ECU. This is inside the box and can cost £1200 to replace if you have a new one.

Thanks for that quick response. Is the ECU box located under front carpet, i.e the one which causes all the problems when Audi water ingress problem occurs, or am I way off the mark here?

Your car has the Multitronic (what I call Multichronic) continuously variable transmission which is single speed, not five speed. As you told me in the PM, it is the F125 switch as I thought, these are located inside the gearbox and are quite a lot of work to change as all the transmission fluid is lost.

One thing I have noticed when looking up the part number is that your car has an HPN transmission and there are 6 and 7 plate clutch versions of the HPN and ETKA is unsure of which ECU your car needs, the two options I get being 4B0 910 156 G or N. The way forward with this is when you have the fault code read done again, the ECU part number should come up on the read and this number can be used to determine the number required for the new part. Often there is a two to three week wait for the new ready to install ECU to come from Germany.

That is really helpful! Thanks a lot!!

Need to wait now for the error message to repeat and take it from there. Just hope the car keeps going and doesn't leave me stranded somewhere. Two to three weeks is a long wait, but this car is my favourite car out of all the cars I've owned and would find it very difficult to part with.

Will let you know eventual outcome and thanks again
