    Hi,

I have been looking to upgrade my MFD2 to RNS 510 and saw all the problems with the CAN Gateway and batteries going flat if you have a pre 2007 Passat etc.

Apologies if this has been discussed on another thread and I missed it...

I was looking on ebay for the newer CAN Gateway and spotted this which may be of help to me and some of you:

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...id=p2761.l1259

on the face of it, it seems like the ideal solution - and cheaper than a new gateway without all the coding crap on VAG COM or whatever. Does anyone know if this will work, or the other way and cause more problems.

I thought a new CAN gateway was about £100 from the dealer anyway?

my dealer quoted £123 and that was supply only - then they or someone else would need to code it with VAG COM.

They had no idea there was a battery drain issue and didn't know about changing or what a CAN gateway was (unbelievable) - more like fit the thing and get a flat battery, bring it in, £60+ per hour to find problem and then change and code gateway thank you very much.

They didn't seem to want to help on what part number gateway I need for latest firmware - when they fit the sodding things in their cars!!

If this other adapter works and is ok then that saves a whole lot of trouble in my opinion - IF it is as good as it says 'on the tin' .

Get an aftermarket unit, why pay £1500 for a sat nav stereo, £900 will but you a peachy Pioneer or Kenwood unit, or if you really wanna save some money get the Xzent Inphase unit for £380 that does sat nav and everything else as well.

Well I went for the 'Anti Battery Drain' adaptor lead as mentioned previously.

    Works an absolute treat!!

Saves all the cr*p of getting the right gateway and getting in coded for some.

Just plug your loom into it, then the adaptor loom into the RNS 510 - not forgetting to try the cd/ipod for sound quality 1st before install in case you need to swap wires 2+3 (as other threads)

Bit of a squeeze to tuck loom gateway and connector block away but not to bad.

I have now fitted a RNS 510 with this adaptor lead and it was all a doddle.

RNS 510 has Firwmware 2720, Maps 6.1 with Speed Camera locations installed on Hard Drive, DVD in motion enabled.

The car also had a Stage 1 Custom re-map done at Jabba Sport nr Peterborough done as well - took the bhp up to 180bhp.

tdi sport - that's great news. Not thinking about upgrading any time soon, but if I do, then I know there's a simple solution to the problem. I understand this would also work for the RNS310?

    Thanks.

Nice that it works I guess. I went for the new CAN gateway though, £60 from Ebay.de and it is easy to fit yourself - you really don't need to be paying dealers a fortune for simple stuff like this.

There is an even easier fix its software. I got it from ebay member when I bought my rns510.
the only downside was that after the software modification is done using a cd the time does not display on my rns510 version H when you turn the unit of while the car is still running.
