    hi all
i bought my golf mk4 1999 1.9 gt tdi about 3 weeks ago it has had a recon engine and turbo and runs really well but the problem i am having is when i go to get any parts for the car they ask for the engine code.now i have read most of the threads on here about where to find the engine code on the car but it does not apply to me as its a recon engine and also i have found out that it is the later pd engine.please could some one tell me where on the engine the code will be as i am getting my brother inlaw (who is a machanic) to do the cam belt and water pump but i can not get the cam belt kit and water pump with out the engine code its driving me mad as every one ask's for the code and i dont know what the code is or where to find it..i have done the oil change after reading on here about the right oil so thanks for the info on that one.great forum by the way done a lot of reading and pleased i joined.

There should be a sticker on top of the cambelt cover which has the engine code on it.

There should be a sticker in the boot, near the spare wheel recess, under the carpet, with this on it. It details the VIN number, colour code, etc.

thanks for the reply chaps but there is no sticker on the cam cover and because it is a recon engine in it the sticker in the boot will will not quote the code for that engine.i need to find out if the code is stamped on the engine itself or maybe on the head.if anyone can tell me that would be great then i can get the cam belt done.
    thanks again

Yeah, it's pointless looking in the boot if the engine is not the original one.

Never heard of the engine code being stamped on the engine. My thought would be to take it to a VW specialist who may be able to figure it out by looking at the engine and various components to narrow the choices down.

IIRC, you should find this stamped on the block in a flat area close to the bell housing....between that and the oil filter housing at the front of the engine, it may mean having to move some pipes or cables out of the way and you may need some sandpaper to clean the flat area so you can see the code.
