    Hello there,

I have recently purchased a 1.9 tdi on a 56 plate with just under 120k on the clock. It has just started making a strange noise when on tick over, you can hear it easily outside the car. The noise is probably best described as sounding like a pulley or pump with shot bearings.
However when you press the clutch the sound goes away - when you release it comes back and you can feel the vibration through the pedal.

I have done a bit of research and fear it could be the DMF, does anyone else have any ideas given the symptoms - I know it's difficult going on peoples descriptions!

    Many thanks

    Alastair

That can also be a layshaft bearing as well.

If you can feel it through the clutch pedal it is the DMF/clutch combination. The DMF will make a slight chattering noise at first. You could be feeling the clutch lining breaking up...They do that. Have a look at my pic....That.'s a clutch plate with no friction material left. Don't ignore it. If the DMF fails completely it can smash the gearbox case or even set the car on fire (according to VW).

I have never heard of a fire but it worried VW so much they sent out a bulletin about it so I guess it did happen. Clutch and DMF is just under £400 from GSF or Eurocarparts and about the same to fit. I have heard of people having it done for £650 all in. Dealers charge up to £1500...

    Thanks Martin,

got a quote today, £700 from an independent and £1100 less 15% from VW

Will be going down the indie route me thinks.

    Cheers for your help
