Cycle / Bike Carrier & Roofbars experience & advice

Hi

I've bought a Mont Blanc rear high mount cycle carrier for my Passat Estate (57 plate). It states the bottom two straps must be anchored to a metal point under the car - I've looked under the rear bumper but cannot see any suitable points - it's all plastic (presume for aerodynamics).

You could possibly anchor the left strap to the exhaust bracket but if I strap the right one to this it's surely not distributing the weight correctly? Also worried such a carrier might damage the bumper itself as the bumper seems quite soft.

Has anyone bought such a carrier and managed to fix it?

Ideally I'd get a towbar carrier, but as I haven't got a towbar this is too costly an option really. Other option is roof mounted, can anyone recommend a good set of roof bars at a reasonable price?
